When/if you DO need Xifaxan, the advice you have been given is good...try a card plan and try to have your doc get a pre-authorization. I wrote a letter for Mike with a line in it like this: "My partner is dying of advanced liver disease. His life expectancy is 90 days without a transplant. Unless you are denying your fallen soldiers their morphine while dying of wounds in the field, please do not deny my partner some semblance of mental health as he passes. He won't need them long!" He got the pills approved. He also got a liver transplant in time, though he was one sick dude for a long time. When HE is really bad, the patient can be quite impaired...angry, out of control, confused, ,and likely to do some strange things. We had an ongoing fight about the driving. He would get so angry at other drivers I thought he would drive into other cars to "train them." I would not drive with him and we would take 2 cars for a while until he surrendered...and got on the Xifaxan. We have done some reflection on that time and realize that he has NO memory of the year before transplant...people came from all over to visit "one last time" from far away...Germany, Utah, Connecticut...we are in Florida, ...and he says they did not...hmmmm. Your Meld of 14 is serious but not dire at this time. Glad the HE has leveled off for now. Best to you. Mama Lama
