Has anyone here ever had Kidney failure & had Kidney Transplant & now is in Liver Failure

Some antibiotics and immune supressant meds can cause acute liver failure.. However your transplant was 6 months ago. What has your drs told you?

I did hear of one member who needed a liver transplant and before the transplant the kidneys failed..

yah most people do have liver failure 1st then & also kidney failure. problems started with liver about 3 after Hubby's transplant & so they thought it was anti rejection meds so they changed, but his bilirubin has not come down under 10 so they still are not sure what is going on. They are calling it chronic Liver failure.

At our house the path has been just the opposite: liver transplant in 2011. now stage 3 kidney disease. They have changed his rejection meds, but each time his TPed liver gets cranky...so he is back on the prograf which is hard on the kidneys. Once he wound up in the hospital...so he stays on the prograf. His nephrologist says there is a lot they can do with kidney issues...dialysis and transplant...and they'd put Mike on a TP list for a kidney even though he is a liver TP guy if he gets really bad. I hope you are working with a major medical center (TP hospital) and not a community GI doc on the liver stuff....maybe where he got his kidney if they do both at that center. Best to him...what a worry...hopefully he is not a drinking man.

his meld score is about 20-22 depends on Bilirubin that week it had gone down to 10.2 but now back up to 13.3. All his Doctors are from Transplant center that does it all, but they still can't figure out what is causing issues. Good thing is he does not drink at all. I just wish they would put him on transplant list for a Liver cause I sure don't want his New Kidney to go bad. He is so Yellow right now actually like all bronze so not good. Getting to where the smell of food makes him sick especially at dinner time.

Do you know that Meld scores that qualify for TP vary from region to region? Or they did when Mike had his. Here in Florida the average was 22 at his time. In the Northeast and Westcoast Meld may need to be much higher. It depends on the volume of cadaver livers that enter the system. With the NE and W being more progressive areas, they have helmut laws that cut down seriously on the number of healthy folks who die in wrecks...here in Florida the bikers have successfully resisted a helmut law, the weather is great for riding all year, and voila...donor livers. Medical tourism is popular here. Folks will get to the high teens and then move to a rental apartment near a transplant center and do the evaluation here and wait their turn. Now this may have changed some in recent years, but I don't think so.

I just wish they would get him started to get put on list, but his Dr is trying to figure out what the real cause is for his Chronic liver failure & I guess till they have excluded everything to try to figure what is causing it it's gona be a LONG ruff ride for him & me watching him die a Slow death. 1st he was on Dialysis for 8yrs & almost died at least once a year ever since, then got kidney transplant in Augt 2017 & then 3 moths after kidney transplant he get liver failure.

my heart goes out to you...and yes...both of you are living through this. have you confidence in his liver docs? do you need a second opinion? one member shopped for a center...she lived in ny and they had a really high meld threshold, so she visited Mayo in Florida and one of the centers in New Orleans...they made her happy and she stuck there until it was her turn.
