Liver enzymes

I am new to the forum, and I need some advice . My wife has had stomach flu like symptoms for a week she saw primary care DR and was thought to have the stomach flu and was given nausea medicine and Metamucil for constipation . Two day later things had gotten worse I brought her to the ER they found her liver enzymes were over 4000 and 1600 and had hepatitis they admitted her and thought that the Tylenol she had been taking for pain was the cause they did blood work and she was well within safe limits . They gave her IV fluids and her levels started to come down sent her home two day later and said to follow up with her primary care DR . Less than 24 hr later she is so bad she can’t even walk I take her back to the ER they check her levels again and they have gone back up they admit her back in the hospital and the admitting Dr says the one of the test is back from her first stay and it is positive for cytomegalovirus and that is the cause of her liver problem. The internal medicine Dr came in last night and said that it wasn’t the cause that there was some other underlying condition .He said they have tested for all the common stuff and everything has come back negitive and all other blood work is normal said he was going to start testing for some “weird “ stuff (his words) and may do a liver biopsy . There is no family history of any autoimmune disease or liver problems . What questions do I need to be asking what test should I request . Thank for your help

Welcome to the forum Srah. If you are near a major medical center and have any concerns about the care your wife is receiving at at community GI practice, be sure to escalate or get a second opinion from a board certified hepatologist who caters ONLY to liver issues.

When my partner, Mike, was very ill, his local GI did not take his symptoms seriously enough and within 6 months he qualified for a liver transplant...he got really sick quickly.
