Great. You dont have to take any other immunosuppresants apart from Prograf? As you know my sister is on Prograf, Cellcept 1000 mg twice a day and Wysolone (steroid) 7.5 a day . I am just curious and increasing my knowledge base. It may help someday.. Take care Connie.

I only take 1 mg. twice per day. My transplant docs they often keep patients on bactrim forever. It's a safety precaution. Antibiotics don't stop viruses like the flu. I was given antiviral meds for the first few months after my transplant. I'll be in Boston for an MRI and a face-to-face 6 month checkup, beginning tomorrow. I'll ask about bactrim when I'm there.

David, good luck!

No, I take no other antirejection drugs...just the Prograf 1 mg. I took Prednisone and Cellcept for 4 mos. Otherwise, I take magnesium oxide 400 mg twice a day, Lasix 40 mg once a day, metoprolol (BP med) 50 mg once a day, vitamins, Lortab for arthritic pain, and meds to help with sleep (Trazodone, Flexeril, Benadryl), and omeprazole for reflux.

I have now been undetectable for Hep C for 12 months. That doesn't mean I'm cured, but it is good news. On the other hand, I'm producing too many red blood cells, probably from eating too much iron (spinach and Swiss chard,which are fresh from a local farm). I have to go to the hospital tomorrow and have a unit of blood drawn which will then be thrown away. Not a big thing. They also want me to take 2 mg. of prograf in the am. and 1 mg. in the pm.. That's now been happening for the past year, 1 and 1and 2 and 1. The transplant folks said my numbers are great and I don't go back for 6 months. The fresh veggies are almost done for the year, so it's back to pasta and potatoes until next summer.

David, Mike has had episodes of too much iron also and they were going to begin the "phebotomy" treatments (as no leeches were available like the old days!) But his iron count resolved. He was told the same thing...to stay away from spinach, chard and kale, etc. No problem for him...if you get my meaning.

This fall Mike is anemic instead. How odd.

My wife received a portion of a deceased liver in 2012 after getting cirrhosis from hep c due to her employment in the hospital surgery department. After several problems and additional surgery she has been doing well for the last 5 years but she did develop Type 1 diabetes which is generally out of control. She is now on Tacro, Actigall, Lantus and Humalog. Recently her microalbumin level shot up to 565. Her primary care doc said that she has so many things going on and her situation is complicated but he believes her liver is failing. All other labs besides glucose and microalbumin were within range. She has an appointment with an endocrinologist and has made contact with her liver doctor. Has anyone experienced anything like this post transplant? She is scared to death she is now dying so I'm looking for a little support. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your situation..I am also waiting for my brother to die. He didn’t qualify for a transplant. He got liver cancer while trying to cure his hep c.. It’s been 3 years since the cancer dx,

I hope your wife isn’t suffering physically. I hope they can figure a plan for her.. And take care of yourself also, I know how tough it is on the family. Let us know how things go..
