can a person get hep c if they touch dry blood on a doorknob and they got hangnails, paper cuts on their fingers? or is this considered casual contact?

Welcome, hockey. I would think it's highly unlikely. If it were fresh blood, there would be the tiniest possibility. The main means of transmission are through transfusions done before screening was available, and through shared needles.

But hep b is different,,,,,,something about lives longer outside the body,and can be transmitted easier, at least that is what my husbands drs have told us.

Trish, you are right about hep B, but Hockey was asking about C. Also, there is a preventative shot against B, though no good if one has already contracted it. I have the antibodies for B, but never even knew I had it. I imagine I contracted it around the same time as the C. Thank goodness, my immune system knocked it out and I cannot get it again, nor am I a carrier.

yes, good for you! But please make sure your body built up the antibodies, as I had the vaccinations too ,and still contracted it about 6 years later, dr said that I had NO antibodies,,,,,,,only a small chance this happens but its worth being checked to make sure:)

what about kissing? if a person had a small cut lip and their blood got into the mouth will the saliva kill hep c ? has there been any documented cases?

Hi Hockey,

You can not get Hepatitis C from kissing. Hepatitis C is transmitted via blood to blood........meaning, if you had an open cut and someone with Hepatitis C got their blood on your cut it can be contracted this way.

As far as the saliva  killing the Hep C Virus, I can not say Yes or No on that question. I'm taking it by your posts that you have been around someone with Hepatitis C, yes?

Hockey, check out the links given above, and also my thread titled Please Get Checked in this forum!! There are thousands of people who have hep C in the US, and many more abroad, but also thousands who do not even know they have it. The number of liver transplants has skyrocketed due to hep C...or rather, what hep C does to the liver: Liver cancer, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Get educated, and if there is the slightest possibility you may have contracted hep C (or B), get tested!
