cellcept and trying to conceive

A little background about me : I have AIH (auto immune hep) and I have had a lot of side effects from the steroids so of course my doc wants me off. I started to taper down the ‘roids and started @ 500 mg of Cellcept twice a day. Things were great until I got down to 9 mg of the prednisone my levels went crazy so I'm back up to 20 mgs of pred. and they want me to go up to 750 Cellcept twice a day.   Current issue : I am scared to death to take the Cellcept. I am scared of what it is doing to my body. My doc says it’s a fairly new drug, so it scares me that I'm doing some other kind of damage. I want to get pregnant by the end of the year and you are not supposed to while on the Cellcept. You have to stop it 6 wks before u even think about getting preg. im waiting for my numbers to be good again before we start trying but in the meantime: ·         Has anyone had a hard time trying to conceive right after stopping Cellcept? ·         Can it make you sterile? ·         Any problems with your baby after you waited the 6 wks before conceiving? ·         Any other info you can provide?

Hi LilacLuv. I just read some stuff on Cellcept and I can understand your concern.

"CellCept has caused birth defects in animals, and there may be a similar risk in humans. Do not use CellCept if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. To make sure you are not pregnant before using mycophenolate, you may need to have a pregnancy test within 1 week before your treatment starts.

Unless you have had a hysterectomy, you must use effective birth control to keep from getting pregnant while using this medication. Birth control is recommended even if you have have been infertile (unable to get pregnant) in the past. Use two effective non-hormonal forms of birth control (condoms, diaphragm, or spermicides) while you are using CellCept and for at least 6 weeks after your treatment ends.
Do not open the medicine capsule or crush or chew a tablet. Do not use a pill that has been accidentally broken. The medicine from a crushed or broken pill can be dangerous if it gets in your eyes, mouth, or nose, or on your skin. If it does come in contact with these areas, wash your skin with soap and water or rinse your eyes with water. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to safely handle and dispose of a broken tablet or capsule."

HOW TO DISPOSE OF A BROKEN CAPSULE???? AND THEY WANT PPL TO PUT IT IN THERE BODY??? CONFUSING!!!!!

I have not been completely diagnosed with AIH but it seem a good chance that is what I have. So I am trying to wrap my head around it.

I would like to have one more child (have two daughters) so medication and fertility concern me as well. I read some where that being pregnant was actually good for AIH (how true I don't know). It makes since though because the immune system goes down during pregnancy.
