Hello everyone,

    It's been a long time since I last posted. Thought I would drop in and give an update on my husband.

    His biopsy came back negative for cancer. :-)

    Everything was going really well until December, when he started getting high ammonia levels. He was hospitalized twice in 2 weeks because of it. They were 129 when he went in the first time and went as high as 170 before they started to drop. Then a couple weeks later he had to go back and they were 167 that time, don't remember exactly how high they got that time before they got them down. 

   He got out of the hospital on Dec. 23, just in time for Christmas.

   yeah   yeah   yeah   yeah . Had a wonderful time with the 2 grandsons.

   They had to increase his aldactone to 200mg. he is now taking 45ml of lactalose 3 times a day. It is making him so sick. Somestimes he has to take a little more than he is suppose to, just to get it to work. His weight goes up and down although he isn't eating very much and what he is eating, gets "flushed" out. I know it has to do with the fluid, but can't get it under control. He had the endoscopy done and he doesn't have any varices like they said. I'm very thankful for that. So, over all, things look pretty good for right now.

Hello HEPcHATER,

It has been awhile since you have posted. I'm glad your husbands biopsy was negative! That's good news! Sorry to here he's been so sick and in the hospital. I hope you both have a better 2008! So far our's has been pretty good but, that's only because I'm on vacation right now! I will return to reality on Monday! Then I take Will back to Shand's for another CT on the 11th as they did a biopsy in Oct. and found a small spot they are keeping an eye on as of Dec. 14th it has not gotten any bigger and the endoscopy showed no spreading of this disease! You are in our Thoughts and Prayers and are wished a very Happy and Healthy 2008!

Hi HEPcHATER, I am so sorry that your husband is going through so much. It is really a good thing that he doesn't have varices. With portal hypertension and varices the chance of servere complications is much greater. I hope that they will be able to get the fluid retention under control soon. I have noticed that the swelling of my husband's legs and encephalopathy coincide. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Moms Will: I hope everything turns out great for your son.
Butterfly: The doctors told us that odds were he would have varices due to his portal hypertension, but they were wrong:]. They have him on lasix and aldactone for the fluid retension. And they added an antibiotic after his second bout with high ammonia levels.

Does your husband have problems with the lactulose not making him "go" at times? My husband does, and it makes him so sick.

We are still waiting to hear from disability. Called them today and they said we should hear something by next week. I pray that it goes through. Working extra these days to make ends meet, but would rather be home taking care of him. Sometimes I feel guilty for not being here all the time.

I hope all is well this evening, and pray for a good day tomorrow.

HEPcHATER, My husband doesn't have that problem with lactulose. At first it was hard for us to get his dosage right because he couldn't stop going. He usually takes 45mg twice a day. Sometimes he takes it three times a day.

I know how you feel about working more hours. I work in an accounting office and tax season is upon me. I will be working 11-12 hours a day in about two weeks until April 15. If my husband's Social Security doesn't come in after that I will most likely have to take a second job to make ends meet. I have also been worried and feeling guilty about leaving him here alone. He rarely ever gets out of the house. Most the time he just wants to sleep here lately. I am lucky in that my job is just 2 minutes away, and I work for good people that are very understanding if something should come up, and I would have to leave. So far he has been pretty stable, thank God. Just fatigued and not himself most of the time.

I will pray that your husband's disability comes through soon.

HepcHater, I sincerely hope that your hubby gets approved for disability soon!! That will decrease the financial stress.
