My doc just suggested a drug called Prograf (tracrolimus) to treat my AIH because I am not responding well to anything else and they want to get me off the prednisone. I am very nervous about trying anything so I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this medication.   - What are the side effects? Physical & emotional (high mg of prednisone makes me suicidal so Im very considered about this)  - what are the chances of healthy pregnancy (Im only 24 and would really love to have children soon, with Cellcept that was a not possible). I would really appreciate any you guys sharing your experiences.   THANKS!  Be Well J

I don't have any experience with this drug, so I looked it up in my Mosby's Drug Reference.  It is listed as a pregnancy Category C, stating the drug is excreted in breast milk, so avoid nursing.  I'm not sure what that category means.  Perhaps Shelly will know. 

Other than that, Prograf has a ton of possible side effects and adverse reactions, but no more so than prednisone.  I guess if your doctor is recommending it, it's your decision.

I have not had any experience with this medication. I too have AIH and crohns and currently on prednisone and Imuran along with a host of others. I do know that there are several other immune suppressant drugs out there besides imuran and cellcept. You may want to check out the FDA web site. It always you to ask speciific questions about medications that have been FDA approved. It may be helpful in looking up issues regarding pregnancy, side effects, etc. Hopefully you will soon get answers to this problems so that you can make an informed decision regarding your treatmetn. Thank you so much. I spoke with a specialist at Mt Sinai, NY and he is very much against me taking it (too many serious side effects) so I guess i will have to continue to try and get more information on Cellcept, although I have been hitting a brick wall when trying to get anwsers to my questions about it. Thank you both for your help. I am going to check the FDA website today and hopefully I will find something there :)
