Hi All,
I have not posted for a while but have been logging in almost everyday. I thought I would share what is happening and give everyone out there with AIH some positive information.
I was diognosed with AIH about 2 years ago and had very high AST and ALT levels but only sligthly postive ANA and SMA levels. I had a liver biopsy and it showed grade 4 Stage 2 disease. I went to the University of Miami Center for Liver Disease where the doctors there felt my AIH was triggered by drug-induced effect from Lipitor. I was taken off all drugs and but on 40 mg of prednisone my levels continue to go up I was then put on 60mg and the levels started to come down. I was then stable and put on 40mg for a year. I was unable to take the Imuran and developed hepatotoxicity so had to remain on the prednisone. Gained 20 pds and felt awful. Well the good news is the doctor in Miami had me weaned to 20mg and then stay at that level until I had 6 months of normal AST & ALT. Ithen had another liver biopsy that showed minimal inflammation and no fibrosis. The doctor then felt it was safe to wean me very slowly 20 to 15 for a month 15 to 10 etc. Well I have been off the prednisone now for almost two months lost 17 pds and have normal AST's and ALT's I am still having blood tests ever two weeks to be sure they stay normal but wanted to give everyone with AIH some positive news. I will keep you posted on my progress has anyone else out there been able to come off the prednisone?
