Hi Everyone.   I can't believe a persons feet and legs can get so big.  Jerry has now tipped the scales at 195.  He weighed 165 last Monday.  I have never seen anything like it.  I called the Dr. to see about increasing his diuretics.  The Dr. said a big NO because of his kidneys   He is getting drained tomorrow.  Hopefully that will help his feet also.  We can't even get the socks on him.  Every time something new happens I just panic.  It just means the clock is ticking.  Scarey.  Is there anyone else that has the swelling in their feet and legs?

Hello JoAnn,

I can relate to the feet and lower leg swelling. My husband's reminded me of elephant feet. When ever they swelled up I would make sure I cut back on his sodium and liquids. I would have him chew on ice if he got thirsty. I also made him elevate his feet even when he was laying down.

It sure is a tough balancing act huh? Good luck. Hope everything goes back to normal after the draining tomorrow.

JoAnn, I had horrible swelling prior to my liver surgery.  As you know, I still have a problem with fluid retention, 'though it's now confined mostly to my midriff.  If you have already restricted fluids and sodium, and they won't increase his diruretics, then hopefully the draining tomorrow will help considerably.

JoAnn, yes we go through this also. I remember a time he actually sloshed like a water bed when he tried to walk. You would think a person couldnt get that big, I thought it was his shoes making the noise but no it was him fluid would seep from the pores in his skin. Tapping was the only thing to do and sodium needs to be gone, he was told when he was thirsty to drink half as much as it would take to quench his thirst. There are times he can gain 4lbs a day. He gets weighed on the scale attached to the virtual nurse. Good luck with the tapping and usually a couple units of albumin goes good with that when they hit 4 units or more. Wishing Jerry well
