Hi, Veryconfused. I also want to welcome you to the forum. As Lucy stated, cirrhosis is determined by a liver biopsy. One of the symptoms, though, is ascites and edema. It is a result of the liver not functioning properly.
Has your mom stopped drinking? If she doesn't, she will be hastening her demise. However, as Lucy also said, liver disease is a very individualistic thing and each person is different, so there is no way to tell at this point how much longer she has to live. I can tell you, though, that if she doesn't stop drinking, she will not even be considered for a transplant when the time comes.
Liver enzyme levels are not always the best indicator of what is going on. They go up and down. Although I have hep C and had liver cancer at one point, my levels have never been really high and a couple were sometimes normal.
You said that your mom went to the hospital. I assume you meant to the ER. She needs to get a hepatologist to help manage her liver disease. She should be on strong diuretics for the edema and ascites.
