my husband has cirrohosis but he is in denial

I am new to this so bear with me.  My husband has been an alcoholic for many many years.  It has finally caught up to him.  I find it very difficult to tell anyone so this is a first for me.  He has been seeing a Gastrointerologist and has had his stomach drained 3 times since 12/24/08.  He is scheduled to see a hepatologist next wee.  Should I ask the doctor what to expect, because again my husband is in such denial?  Thanks

Hello Toolost, and welcome to HealingWell. Sorry that you are going through this..........Go ahead and read through some of our older posts especially the educational ones. You will learn a lot about what to expect and can ask the doctor very pointed questions concerning your husband's disease and what to expect and the plan of action.

We have a very compassionate and well educated group here.....So you are not alone in this battle any longer....

Hello, Toolost.  I also want to welcome you to the forum.  Pink Grandma has given you excellent suggestions.  I see she has brought some of the educational threads up to the top.  Those will give you a good idea of what to expect.  Is your husband still drinking?  If so, he would not be considered for a liver transplant until he has six months of documented sobriety.  By all means, keep the hepatology appt. as he is the specialist who will answer your questions and determine treatment.

I am glad you found us.  We are all in one big boat together when it comes to liver disease.  There is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about here.  We are here to support each other and offer suggestions from our own experiences and knowledge.

Hello Toolost, Just wanted to welcome you to the forum. My husband also suffers from cirrhosis. It is good that you found us. There are many people here that understand what you are going through. With this disease it is really good to have people to talk to. Knowledge is the best power you can have. Coming here will give you that and support. I'm sorry your husband has this ugly disease. I'll be praying for you both.

Hi Everyone..I'm new to this forum too. Found it while trying to research information about end stage cirrhosis. My dad suffers from cirrhosis due to alcohol...he's been in denial for years. We've tried to get him to stop drinking...but he never listened until now, and I'm afraid it's too late. He's stopped drinking for only about 2 months now...this whole time, the family has been in the dark about his condition and the severity of it. He wouldn't let us talk to the doctors, always told us they couldn't find anything wrong.

I've been trying to find as much information as possible online about this disease...even tried calling the Liver Foundation local chapter. It's a little comforting to know that there's other families out there who are going through similar situations....thanks for listening and for the support!

Dragonfly, Welcome to the forum. I am glad you found us. That is also how I found this place. My husband suffers from cirrhosis, and this place has been alot of help to me. I'm sorry that you father suffers from it also. I guess through your research you have learned that it is a very unpredictable disease. I'm am really glad to hear that your father stopped drinking. That is a step in the right direction. Many transplant centers will consider transplant if the person has been sober for 6 months and has attended AA meetings. I'll be praying that it is not to late.
