I am confused? What is a normal ammonia level?? My brother has been diagnosed with liver failure, his are at 72. The nurse said it was high but not extremely. I read in an old post on this forum that normal was 6-10.

Hi Sad,

The normal is a range of 10-80 ug/dl (ug = micrograms)

Ammonia levels rise when there are large amounts of protein being catabolized and the liver is unable for some reason to convert it into urea so it can be excreted through the kidneys. Anything that interferes with the breakdown of ammonia in the system will increase serum levels.

Thanks for clarification on the ammonia. My brother is so out of it that we can not carry on a conversation.
I would expect that some of the time but not all of the time. He has become increasingly more out of it as each day passes. He has been diagnosed with alcoholic chirrosis, hospitalized for nearly a month now.

I too am a sister to a young man 43 who has cirrhosis. He is not acknowledging the diagnosis, does not talk about it. He is noncompliant and won't allow anyone to speak about it. We all love him and cannot begin to tell him our sorrow. He won't allow us.
