Hi All,

I have a question about flare ups I have AIH and was in remission for about a year recently my liver levels have flared up my Hep doctor told me to take Urso 1200mg, 5mg of prednisone and Milk Thistle.  They do not know what caused the flare up maybe some vitamins I took that had 3500 iu of vitamin A.  My question is has anyone ever came back from a flare up without going on higher doses of Prednison?  I my levels are AST 74 AST 143 I am afraid I am wasting time and they will continue to climb or has anyone recovered with low doses of medication?

I too have AIH and am on pred and urso along with others for this disease. I know that my levels have fluxuated many times during the course of this disease and have stablized without an increase in pred. My hep doc has told me that many factors can effect levels so as other medications, including vitamins. Although I know it is hard try not to stress too much as that can effect levels too.

Thank you so much for your reply I was unable to find anyone that was taking the urso and Pred when I searched can I ask another question do you remember how long it took for the urso to show improvement.  I know I am stressing too much but my husband was operated on for Prostate Cancer recently and it now is his time and I need to get this under some kind of control.  I am going to see my Gastro guy today and hopefully will get some answers I thought I was going to one of the best places with my HeP doctor im Miami but do not get any answers.

I think it took about a month for my levels to go down some but it was longer for it to be able to get it under control. Urso was the first medication they put me on and that was over four years ago so I really can't remember exact time lines. Although I do know that at that time my levels were way out of control (six times higher than they should be) so the length of time it took would be much longer that it would be for you at this time.

I am very sorry to hear about your husbands recent surgery. I hope things went well for him and he has a quick recovery. I can only imagine what kind of stress that could bring on for you. Stay strong and let us know how your appointment goes.

I am in remission & have not had any flare ups. But last year I went on a carrot binge. Ate tons of carrots everyday.

My skin actually turned orange, I was told by my liver Dr. (not Dr  S. in Miami,another dr I was going to at the time) that was because my liver could not handle alot of vitamin A. 

In my opinion, you probably stressed you liver with the Vit. A.

Thanks Rhonda for the information I hope that is the answer I had another set of LFT and they went up again about 40 points they increased my prednisone Gasto Dr and Hep Dr in Miami agreed to 20mg with 1200mg of ursodiol and 250 of Milk Thistle but I have stopped the Milk Thistle do not trust herbs.  I also went for MRI today to be sure bile ducts are not blocked since I am having some discomfort on right side under ribcage and I no longer have a gallbladder.  Now Hep doc wants to redo Immunogobulin Quantitation blood tests again to verify autoimmune Hepatitis not sure what is going on I thought that was a done deal after the first set of test 3 yrs ago and 2 liver biopsies?  Going away in a couple of weeks out of the country and was hoping things would be at lease under control now it seems the doctors are back to square one.
