Saskatchewan Man with Liver Disease Raising Awareness

Hi Everyone,

My best friend Samuel has just started cycling across the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan. This is remarkable considering he is riding a garage sale mountain bike and also because he suffers from Liver Disease (caused by Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency). It would be really great if everyone clicked over to his blog and checked out his story. He is not doing it for money or anything like that, he just wants everyone to know what he is doing so he can raise awareness of this Liver Disorder. Yesterday, Samuel travelled over 315 km, he is really pushing himself to his limits. Way to go Samuel!

Another 267 Kilometres behind him!

For someone who only started training a month ago and was 50 pounds overweight just a few months ago, Samuel is doing amazingly. So far his garage sale mountain bike is holding up well, and he's hoping his muscles will too. He only has 122 km left, but the wind has changed and it is slowing him down. Samuel is Finished!

He finished on Monday afternoon. He bicycled over 700 km (705.38 km to be exact) in 3 days. Way to go Samuel!!

WOW! Amazing! Our family has been affected by Alpha-1 Anitrypson deficiency. It is my husband's side of the family as he has two brothers affected by it and he has the good gene/bad gene for it. One brother died before they knew what Alpha 1 was, and the other brother had a liver transplant 19 YEARS AGO and he is still going strong!!! My husband has hep c/ cirrhosis of the liver and he also has some COPD issues as well as numerous other issues. We have been told that although he does not have the two bad genes it takes to have a full blown effect of Alpha-1, it does not help his cause. I am so glad he is raising awareness!!
