It's been a while since I was here! Had to have surgery and take some time for myself but I am back now!
We finally got the GI dr. to refer us to a hepatologist in June since my dad's MELD score was 25. Our first visit was on July 1st and as most of you know we did the blood work, xrays, etc. Once all results were back we saw the dr. she said dad's MELD score had decreased a lot so she didn't see the need to evaluate him for the transplant list at this time although this is really not an option at this point due to the fact that my dad is still drinking!!
Back in May dad had become really confused and we had to make our first trip to the hospital to have fluid drained. Due to the confusion he wasn't taking his meds right and had taken himself off the lactulose so I started going down weekly to fix his meds for him and for a while he was doing so much better then he decided I wasn't fixing his meds correctly
so we were back to square one!! about
3 weeks ago my mom calls me in the wee hours of the morning cause she had gotten up and found my dad in the floor unresponsive. I go down and he has all the classic symptoms of someone who has had a stroke so we call the ambulance and go to the hospital. All test were neg. for stroke. Keep in mind he refused to let me fix his meds anymore and that he takes Atarax for itching and had been taking Ambien for sleep but that wasn't needed anymore since he was sleeping at least 20 hours a day. Anyway, to make a long story short, come to find out he had taken approximately 6 Ambien in a 24 hour period because he had gotten it mixed up with his other meds
Needless to say I'm back fixing his meds for him!!
As of today dad is really going downhill. He has lost a lot of weight, sleeps all the time, not eating, and the itching is almost unbearable. He has also started urinating on himself and falls a lot when he is up. I told mom that it was probably time to see about
getting hospice to come in. We are all just trying to make the best of the situation, do what we can while we can, and take time out for ourselves as it is much needed!
Sorry for such a long post but just wanted to give everyone an update!
Thanks for listening,
Shelia
