portal systemic encepholapathy

My dad has been an alcoholic for 40 plus years. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C ten years ago. Over the last year and a half we have noticed some EXTREME changes in his behavior and health. He sleeps more throughout the day, his eyes roll around in his head, he doesnt remember anything, he repeats himself and has no response to normal conversation. he acts drunk when he has had nothing to drink. muscle wasting and ascites. no jaundice. lack of appetite. amnesia. anger. depression. mood swings. irritability. sudden bouts of crying. lashing out at my brother and mom. inability to complete simple tasks. seems overwhelmed by the thought of tasks that do not fit into his normal daily routine. will not leave the house anymore. still drinking. I found a paper from his doctor that said his viral load is very high, otherwise he will not tell us what the doctor says. Keeps saying he is going to die anyway, so what is the point. Please tell me if any of this can be stopped or slowed down. My mother and I are trying to get access to his medical charts. The hardest part is, he is normal for a few hours in the morning before the toxins build up in his brain. It is the worst thing I could imagine for him......
