my husband is diabetic and has hepc w/cirrohis. i have kept ajournal on all his test results and different changes in his health and always have lots of questions for his dr. at appts. i have a hard time keeping him taking his xifaxan and lactolose on a consistent basis as he thinks i'm nagging. but his ammonia levels we got his ammonia levels down to 114 and then he slacked again and last time was 312!! i know his confusion is getting worse as i have to now measure his insulin shots and give them to him.he really has me scared and don't want to be a nag and have explained that i want him better as i am in this for the long haul!! but i want give up!!  i read alot of posts and really feel like i have found a place with lots more information and support! hello to all and best wishs to all  lil d

Hidesrtidy/Lil, welcome to the forum!  Please be sure to read the information in the folder at the top of the page entitled Hepatitis Resources.

Having diabetes is an additional challenge for a hep C patient.  As far as the Lactulose and Xifaxan, if you are with him when he needs to take his meds, go to him with the pill, liquid, and say, "Time for your meds."  Don't leave it up to him to take them or nag him to do so.  You know how nurses do this in the hospital?  Same idea.  And don't leave his side until he takes them.  Make it a business-like thing instead of an emotional one.  Other members may have other ideas.

I say just matter of factly hand them over with a look that says no arguing! Dont ask him to take meds. I had little dixie cups one for all the pills and one for lactulose and always made sure he had fresh water before I handed them over. Doug learned real quick suck it up and take it. There is no real kind way to give someone lactulose!!!

I deal with this in the residential psych facility I work in... we just approach a non med compliant person with... firmness... if they refuse... approach again in 10 to 15 minutes... but always with the expectation that they will take them... the firmness works. 99 per cent of the time... if not... we monitor closely until we can get compliance because we deal with medically fragile people who have complicated medical conditions besides the psych issues... but a firm approach... and don't get upset as they said.. it's not personal... at all...
