Hey GNET,
I haven't been able to post much this week. I've been on 24/7 call. I understand your frustration with the MELD score.
There are 11 organ transplant regions in the United States (see below). Each region sets their standards based on a complex set of factors and statistics unique to that region. The MELD score is a measure used to predict the mortality or prognosis of a patient with chronic liver disease over a period of 3 months.
REG STATES
1 Connecticut , Maine , Massachusetts , New Hampshire , Rhode Island Region
2 D.C., Delaware , Maryland , New Jersey , Pennsylvania , West Virginia Region
3 Alabama , Arkansas , Florida , Georgia , Louisiana , Mississippi , Puerto Rico Region
4 Oklahoma , Texas Region
5 Arizona , California , Nevada , New Mexico , Utah Region
6 Alaska , Hawaii , Idaho , Montana , Oregon , Washington Region
7 Illinois , Minnesota , North Dakota , South Dakota , Wisconsin Region
8 Colorado , Iowa , Kansas , Missouri , Nebraska , Wyoming Region
9 New York , Vermont Region
10 Indiana , Michigan , Ohio Region
11 Kentucky , North Carolina , South Carolina , Tennessee , Virginia
There has always been a great deal of controversy regarding the MELD system. As I’ve always said, every liver patient is different so the MELD score doesn’t accurately reflect the health of the patient. However, a standard had to be assigned to the al location of organs. It is what it is.
Harvey received his transplant at Florida Hospital in Orlando after being turned down for transplant at Shand's in Gainesville. It didn't happen easily. It was a miracale that everything fell into place. That's a long story. I have to get to work. I'll tell you more about it later.
God bless. Take care.
Penny
