HC, taking Lipitor could have played a part in his liver disease. Is he still taking it? Perhaps it's time for him to work with his doctor to find an alternative. The liver filters everything, so everything we ingest has a potential risk for harm. Some medications, such as Lipitor, have a higher risk than others.
Regarding the Diflucan, it appears to also have potential for hepatotoxicity. My drug book says the patient should be monitored for increasing AST, ALT, and periodically check alk phos. Also monitor bilirubin levels.
I think your hubby should speak with the prescribing physician and see if there are alternative medications he could take that would not have such a risk to his liver. However, the greatest danger was the heavy alcohol use.
Hugs,
Connie
