Cirrhosis and Alcohol and Lipitor

I wanted to start new thread so as not to push into Liverette, Mystery Diagnosis posts about her mom. Reading about her mom made me wonder a bit about my DH and his liver issues.

DH has always been a big drinker...but never a drunk...he was/is a functioning alcoholic. Drinking more in 2010 than before. Tired, tired, tired and a few other symptoms noticed in March 2010. Up until now, I have been blaming his cirrhosis only on the alcohol, but after reading Liverette's posts I am curious.

How much might his lipitor use have contributed to "tipping" him/his liver over the edge? A year before all his liver tests were fine. He is also the kind of man that when he had a muscle ache he would take 3 or 4 advil at a time...even with me telling him to take no more than 2. Also, in the last 15 months he was taking diflucan from time to time for recurring yeast infections under his cuticles...also known as "bar rot" from cutting and having citrus juices on his hands at work all the time.

I know that it doesn't change where we are now. I am struggling with mentally coming to terms with my husband at best having a chronic illness, at worse facing horrible complications...and even worse than that. But I think if I could blame some of this on the lipitor and advil I could cope better. So that in my dark times I wouldn't be laying blame solely on him.

Thanks for the quick reply Connie. Hubby is off all meds except as prescribed by his GI doc. He is in greater danger from his liver than his blood fats. I do think that the major contributor to his illness was the alcohol and if he didn't cut down then it would have been 2011 or 2012 or whenever that he got sick. The lipitor and diflucan just got him here faster. I just need a bit of a scapegoat.
