hubby's PCP is recommending prilosec to see if acid reflux is giving him a shallow, dry cough (he has had cough since he quit drinking...55 days ago).  PCP and GI doc work in same health care organization and PCP knows about hubby's cirrhosis.  just wanted to check in with you all to see if i should be worried about adding prilosec to his meds.

Emma... Mike had that dry cough too... sometimes he was just miserable with it... didn't help that he continued to smoke... he also had the acid reflux... and was on prilosec.. it helped ... and didn't cause problems with his other numerous medications... that I know of... the other members of course will give you feedback... thoughts are with you today.. Sandi

Emma I haven't heard that it didn't mix with his other meds either.....but to be on the safe side google " prilosec and liver disease meds" or something like that. Something should come up to give you definite information. Good luck.......

I spoke with hubby's GI this morning. He talked about acid reflux sometimes messing with the bacteria in the gut...which complicates the ammonia issue. Hubby has had no HE issues at all yet (knocking on wood now...) so doctor says to try prilosec for a month...if it helps cough great, if not, stop. So we will try. Cough makes hubby feel like a sick person. And he is trying very hard to feel healthy and normal.

Emma, glad you spoke to the GI doc about this issue.  Just to add to the mix, I take prescription Zantac to protect my stomach, but the only liver-related meds I take are diuretics.

Prilosec is the brand name, omeprazole is the generic name. I've taken it for 7 years, through meds when my liver was failing and since my transplant meds. I'd have to say that I've taken it with at least 16 different meds, with no problems. It's prescribed to people with all kinds of medical problems. There may be something it doesn't work with, but your doctor would know that.
