colonoscopy tomorrow

Hubby is going to have colonoscopy tomorrow. Now that he has liver disease, anything special that I should be concerned about with this procedure?

Nothing that I can think of, Emma.  I'm expecting to have one myself in a couple of months.

Hi Emma,

Just be sure to let them know he has liver disease as they'll be giving him a sedative.  He may be more sensitive to it if his liver isn't functioning at 100%.  He shouldn't have any problems though.

Thanks Connie and Dany. I have been thinking about the sedative...but since his regular GI that is treating his liver disease will be performing the procedure, I have decided not to worry about it.

How 'bout that Connie! I have decided not to worry about something for a change! :)

I had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy at the same time, when they were thinking of putting me on the transplant list. My liver was failing and MELD score was mid teens. I was out for less than an hour and woke up feeling rested. I walked out of the hospital after a half hour. Your husband should be fine.

make sure he takes all of the prep medicine...and follows directions completely..... Mike had to do it twice...and have him get a sedative if he get's nervous... Mike took something for anxiety before... it helped..

Being hungry always makes ME grouchy.  I have to fast for 16 hours when I get blood work done, followed by an MRI 4 hours later.

Well we're home. 9 polyps removed. This is grow back after only 2 years. Ugh. Glad it's done. He had a hard time coming back out of the sedation. He skipped his blood pressure meds this morning by accident. I think it was a blessing, because with the extra sedation to get all those polyps, his blood pressure and heart rate were really low during time in the recovery room/booth.

But he's farting up a storm now. Eating. And he wants me to take him to work for an hour this afternoon.

Emma, glad it's over for him and those polyps are gone!  It sounds like it was a good thing he forgot to take his BP med!

 

NST, the drug they use for conscious sedation is called Versed.  I've had it once...and just had no memory of the procedure.  I'm guessing that general anesthesia is okay for those with liver disease, at least for those who haven't decompensated, as I've had 8 major surgeries since being diagnosed with hep C.
