Amonia going up again

New bloods this week show three fold increase in ammonia.

Some on this site say it is more the actual HE status that counts than the numbers.

It was 150 this week.

They called for a complete set of bloods for next Thursday and and increase in Lactulose, though his affect isn't much different. More tired, but nothing nuts.

Mike says he has been compliant with the Lactulose, but who knows.  You pour it out of a jug, it isn't a pill that would be left over in his pill case!

Anyone else have this happen, increased ammonia without changes in mental status?

ML, the ammonia level and HE are so very frustrating to try to keep under control. Unfortunately, the answer is that the lactulose will have to be increased/decreased as his mental status indicates. Since we cannot draw blood every day, we are the best judge as to their mental status. I have had to basically force my husband to take increased doses before. They (the patient) really get tired of all the horrible side effects, but it is a necessary evil.
