Swelling in legs

Quick question, hope someone has an answer. My MIL's legs are swollen, really bad. They have been for days, so the doctor told us to give her an extra fluid pill for 3 days, but now they are bright red, fevered and shiny. Anyone know what would cause this, possible infection or just so much water?

Both could be the problem. I had leg swelling that put me into the hospital a couple of times, plus spending weeks in bed at home. It was so bad that I was unable to bend my legs and at one point the fluid became infected. The pain is unbearable at that point. You need to see the doctor (now), an extra pill won't solve this problem.

I agree with David. She needs to be seen. It sounds like cellulitis. Swollen is one thing; very red and warm is another. This would be considered an emergency. Take her to the ER.
