Developed a 102 fever on Tues. night so transplant nurse told me to get checked by E.R. Admitted Wednesday am. Had CT scan of kidneys, liver ultrasound and nuclear renal scan. Was diagnosed with right kidney swelling and poor drainage to uretha for some unknown reason and resulting UTI infection. Put on vancomyacin which I know is an antibiotic of last resort. Despite all these renal problems, My creatinine remains under 1. I asked the hep doc why I could not get some extra Meld points for all my renal troubles. He did not have a good answer.

Discharged Friday night. Have to to take two weeks of intravenous vancomyacin. They stopped my diuretic and just put me on 5mg of Amiloride because my potassium level was low and I was having hand and feet cramps.
This time they brought in the infectious disease docs into my treatment plan. Have to have labs drawn by home health nurse tomorrow via my pic portal.

I am concerned with all these infections I am getting will further delay or deny me a transplant. Do any of you out there have similar issues????

Oh Suzie, I am so sorry you are having so much health issues right now. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Is is only one Hep doctor that is seeing you. My husband was seen by a number of them as they were on the transplant team at his transplant hospital. Tell any of your hep doctors and the transplant coordinator about the extra points. I wouldn't give up on it. Remember the squeeky wheel gets the oil.

I don't know whether infections mess up your transplant position. But the nephrologist who consults on Mike's Transplant team takes a role in the liver patient's evaluation. He told us if the kidneys continued to be a problem, they would consider a kidney transplant at the same time. Mike has had intermittent acute renal failure, so they keep a close eye. As of last month, he was okay, but...

Hope they can get things patched up for you!

Susie, I'm so sorry that you have been hospitalized again.  Will a home health nurse be coming in every day to give you the IV antibiotic and check on you?  I think ML has the right idea:  Contact the nephrologist who is part of your transplant team to see what he says about extra MELD points.

BTW, it's vancomycin (no a in there.)
