FANTASTIC, David! How many months into treatment are you now?

I got a call from the Transplant Clinic today. My first appt. is for next Mon. afternoon. I have to register (they require that every year) and an hour later see the nurse. I was told that I had to have someone with me for this. This might be a problem and isn't really necessary, in my opinion, but it's "protocol." I told her I would try to get someone...thinking of the neighbor who offered me a ride, but I know she's busy Mon. AM. I also wanted to get the chemoembolization done first before the evaluation begins, but the person I spoke to said it may be part of their testing process for transplant. I still would rather get it done before scheduling anything else. She said she would have the nurse get back to me about that.

such wonderful news David... hurts my heart to hear about those partners who walked away from gems... guess they werent very good at recognizing inner beauty... cuz it surely wasnt outer... ut oh... I was doin so good there for a few lines... good news David...

I appreciate the thought. One of your first posts caught my eye, when you told Rick he was ugly. I said to myself, now there's a guy with an accurate assessment right off the bat.

Where are you from down south? I was born in Duke University Hospital and lived in NC, 'til I was 20. Now I'm on an island, 30 miles at sea in New England. I love to fish, so between freshwater ponds and fantastic saltwater fishing, this place is perfect. Not to mention that I like living in small towns.

I was born in Dalton GA., and raised in Manassas VA. Now I'm on a mtn. top about 85 miles SW of Seattle WA. in a town of about 280 people. I do miss going to the field house for Duke - Carolina games though. Lived in Richmond for a while back in the 80's so it was no more than a day trip, besides I always stopped off at Kings BBQ for the pulled pork.
I bet you get all the good rock lobsters, although they have the Dungeness crabs over here that are about the size of a cocker spaniel. 4+ foot salmon are the norm. You just have to watch the bears. The darn dear will steal your lunch too. A buck grabbed mine off my tailgate while I was installing some windows for a lady. I thought I would just "shew" him away - wrong. He snorted, dropped his head to show me his rack, pawed the ground and I let him have the lunch. He would've field dressed out at about 200 lbs., and the peanut butter sandwich wasn't worth it.
I'm a Gemologist, and Jeweler now. I also cut faceted stones. Back just barely beat out the Knees, and Liver so I couldn't hang windows anymore - got bored, and went back and got my Graduates Degree in Geology. Looks like I might be getting another year of fun fun fun at the Dr.'s offices, so I'm thinking of doing some carvings. Maybe finish up a couple of my hot rods.

Friday will be the end of month 7. I was at a point after my partner blew me off, when I had to fake it when they'd ask me who was going to be with me. I was only going up to MGH every 3 months, so I'd tell them she was shopping, eating lunch, had to work. Finally they said someone had to be there, so my medical proxy was king enough to drive 4 hours and fill in. There was nobody with me when I received a new liver. I'm eternally grateful for that, no teary goodbyes or unchecked emotion. A few days later, my mother and brother were there when I woke up. Two weeks later I was home and taking care of myself. Later when I had a incisional hernia fixed, a nurse I know met me so that I had someone to accompany me out of there. She went back to her floor and I walked back to my hotel room.

My father went to Duke and Duke Law School, but I went to UNC. Even so, I had been raised as a Duke fan, which didn't go over well at UNC. I am a food gatherer. I have worked as a bay scalloper, lobstered, go clamming and dredged mussels when possible. In the next week, squid will be here and they're wonderful. I spend the better part of the summer of 1968 in Kent, just outside of Seattle. Dungeness crabs were what we lived on. At Pike's Market they were selling for $1 each and one was enough for two of us. We'd buy 5 at a time. When he finds out that you're in WA, it's going to break Rick's heart.

Kent's not too far from me - about 45 minutes up the I-5 once I get to it. I'm 25 miles NW of Olympia - in Shelton. Right up in the Olympic mtn.'s. You can tell Rick about the Geoducks. (gooey-ducks)
Somebody tell Rick that it's ok to leave. They don't require you to stay there any longer. Jimmy Carter retired.
I go back home every couple years to get some red clay between my toes, and I'm due. Maybe I can get to see Rick, and we can go get some "A buck a bone" ribs at the Rib Shack. I try to stop off in Raleigh to visit with one of my cutting students - might drag him with me - he has kin down around Atlanta too. If Rick hasn't been out here - he needs to come and see the PNW, and the Rockies.

David, thanks for your transplant experience info. Maybe I'll figure out how to get through it. I have a friend I haven't seen in awhile...talked to about 6 mos. ago. She's now retired, so perhaps she can be one person who can go with me.

Jim, I hitched from NYC to Utah in the summer after HS graduation. A great adventure! The goal was Juneau, Alaska (what's the abbreviation for Alaska?), but I got stuck in Logan, UT. Was broke. Stayed there for the summer, waitressing at a Chinese restaurant, and then back to NYC. All the pictures and films I've seen of the PNW show it to be a beautiful place. Wish I could've made it up that way.

Hi Connie - it's AK., and it is a very beautiful place here. Alaska is a little too barren for me, and cold. Can't hardly stand the cold anymore.

Arneeb - come on down to GA. , and we will show you what "kin's" all about. We can discuss that deliverance movie comment.

My Mike has a similar story, 61 year old professional man with ESLD who could no longer work at his challenging IT career. He could barely use his computer any more at the end, and forgot many days how to use his cell phone features!

When SSD was denied the first time he got a job in a copy center at an office store...but then he couldn't even do half time...to tired. What employer would let you take a 2 hour nap midshift?

Now he has a shiny new liver and is doing quite well.

But it was long slide into dispair and now he has a second chance at his senior years!

We wish you well as this chapter of your life unfolds.

I need to read back, but please know any chance at life depends on avoiding drugs and alcohol!!!!!!
