 hi everyone! didnt imagine i would be posting so soon but hubbys sister just called and said hubbys hands have developed small black spots on them, five on one hand and three on the other, any idea what this could be? she said hes been rambling on about them all day. i said i would try to find out. does anyone know if they are linked to his problems with liver or just random? she also said he is having great trouble using his legs and is in quite a bit of pain. i told her to go see the g.p. with him. rolleyes   xxnatasha.xx :-)

Natasha-sorry this is happening. I have no idea about it. Hopefully someone will chime in soon with an idea.

Natasha, it could be little hemorrhages under the skin, due to elevated PT.  In lay terms, his blood isn't clotting right.  Just a guess.  Do you see old people sometimes with black spots on their arms?  The skin gets thin and if they even touch themselves, they get a bleed under the skin.  It happens in liver patients, too.

I think your advice to his sister was great.  Do not even go searching the web, as you are then caught up in the drama again.  Have her go with him to the doctor and express his concerns there.

thanks connie, he does have trouble with the clotting of his blood, i hadnt thought of that. yes i told his sister she would need to go with him and she has said she will. aparantly he hasnt left her house since he got there so she can monitor what hes drinking. she has mentioned his nasty smell has returned and i explained what that was. i wished her luck and said i would phone there on wednesday unless any emergencies came up before!.

dont they sometimes call those liver spots... or is that something different... but yeah bruising... and deep bruising presents like that.. Sandi

thanks rick, yeah he has been having the purple deep bruises for a long while now but from what i can gather his sister did explain the spots like they are small blood blisters. i think she is taking him up the walk in centre today so we shall see.
rick, if i may ask, what did the doctors say to you when you went in with these problems? what happened next?xxnatasha.xx

wow, and here you are. that was quick work on the part of the doctors though. what happened when you went home? how long untill you went on to receive more treatment? il be honest, i dont really have any knowledge on hep. so dont fully understand any treatment of it other than what ive learnt from here. good on you for pulling through those times, isnt it amazing that one person can indure so much happening to their body and survive and yet another person wouldnt. i guess we arent yet at the poit where we know everything about ourselves. maybe thats a good thing.xxnatasha.xx

wow. what a journey. thank god you survived and are now able to help other people. sounds like you had a great support network to help you. are you happier with who you are now? that must have been such a shock, for it all to have happened so quickly. thank you again for your honesty.xxnatasha.xx

Yes Rick, thank you for sharing.  I always learn something when I read one of your posts.  And I agree with Natasha, bless you for making the changes in your life that you needed to make...and helping others.  I know you had posted the start of your illness before...buried deep in the forum pages now...but a retelling would be really helpful to the new folks here that are dealing with loved ones with liver disease due to alcohol.  I believe your journey shows that where there is life there is hope. 

Natasha-when you can, search the old posts for Rick's.  I have found them to help me so very much.  Especially his views as a patient and as a man.

rick, the way you write things makes it so easy to read and understand. you should write books, i am an avid reader and enjoy your writing immensely. you have a knack of taking me along on the journey and it makes all the difference when you are trying to help and advise.
your honesty is very refreshing and to be honest rick, if you were trying to paint yourself as a saint i would have stopped reading! however, credit where credit is due and you really have come through that dark tunnel and out to a better life. well done on that. i will try to find your old posts and read those instead of bombarding you with questions that have already been answered elsewhere!.
keep on keeping on rick, what you have been through is amazing and i am sure your wife must be so proud to have you as a husband. a real fighter. thank you again rick. xxnatasha.xx

Just a note:  The brown spots are actinic keratoses...a pre-cancer.  They are sometimes called liver spots, but have nothing to do with the liver.  They come from sun damage and are usually found on the face, hands and arms, and the calves.  Being diligent about using sunblock will prevent these.

thanks connie, my grandad had liver spots and they were quite a pale brown colour and looked a little like birth marks, from what my sis in law said hubbys were black dots? could it be the same thing?. thank you for finding out for me connie but to be honest i think he has got bigger fish to be frying at the moment and not worrying too much over black spots on his hands!!! sounds heartless dosent it. its not meant that way.xxnatasha.xx

Things are good at home.  In fact, things are pretty darn good.  A new normal.  Life feels like it use to, just minus the alcohol and some extra fatigue.  But even the fatigue is getting better a bit.  I am so proud of hubby.  He has done everything the doctors have told him to do.  He takes his blood pressure meds for portal hypertension, his vitamins, and we are eating right.  (Still gotta work on the salt thing.)  And we have been rewarded with his improved health.  I couldn't be happier.  I know that my prayers have been answered. 

I don't know what the future holds health wise for him.  I just know as long as he is alcohol free whatever level of damage there is to his liver...well, hopefully it won't get worse.  Just stay were it's at.  We are blessed that he has never experienced any of the bad complications (HE, ascites, edema, bleeds).  And I pray daily that he never does. 

I have learned from you and the other forum members to be prepared, be informed, take it one day at a time, to enjoy each day, count my blessings and most important, to let go and let God.

hey emma,
sounds awful but i dont know yet! she took him yesterday and i said i would call wednesday so the children could also speak with him. i did ask that if anything dramatic happened, would she call and she said she would. she hasnt yet so im presuming all must be ok. my best friends mother passed away last night so i have been busy helping her. what with school runs, clubs and children i havent had five minutes. i will call tomorrow and find out about hubby. thanks so much for asking.xx i dont mean to sound heartless about hubby its just im trying to stick to the boundaries i set thats all. thanks again and will let you know more when i do!.xxnatasha.xx

Natasha-you don't sound heartless at all. I say good for you for setting boundaries and KEEPING THEM! No news is good news...since his sister hasn't called.

I am sorry about your best friend's mother passing. Very kind of you to be assisting.

WOD ur doin what u need to do... and in the end... if he gets sober and maintains it... he will be better for it... but for now u r doin the right thing to maintain good boundaries... and focus on urself and those kids... keep rockin on girl... Sandia.... had to get a new name... cuz Mitzi is Sandi too... so im Sandia now...

hi emma, you are such a sweetie! yes, i called when i got back from school run. the g.p. is unsure exactly what the spots are but thinks the same as people here, possible blood blisters. she took a swab from one and sent to labs. his ascites are not responding too well to the spironolactone now either so she wants him to up the dose on those, and try to hold tight untill the specialist appointment in june. i am still attending that one with him. aparantly, he has cut from 9 litres to 5 litres of cider a day now and is aiming to be on three a day by monday and the doctor said he has to go back next week for results of bloods. phew, that was a mouthfull!!!. ooh, he also has peripheral neuropathy, ( sorry connie if i mis spelled that)!!! this is what the pain in his legs is. i have arranged to call again on friday.
