Medications for restless leg and low Iron??

My husband Dennis has been having a real rough time getting sleep.  He is on the transplant list.  He did a sleep apnea test and he does have that; and they also said he has restless leg syndrome and very low Iron.  I made a call into the transplant center and I only could leave a message and if this is not an emergency they will call back in two days...argh!!  My question:  Is there anyone on here using medication for restless leg and low Iron....We were told not to use Iron supplements years ago....I am not sure of the name of the medication but I think it starts with a TH??  He has been really tired but we thought it was from lack of sleep and the liver disease.

Any info would be great,

His potassium may be low re: restless legs.  But don't buy any supplements until you speak with a transplant coordinator or hepatologist.  Try giving him some bananas meanwhile.  Is he on C-Pap for sleep apnea?  If not, he should be.  As for the low iron, I'd again wait until you can speak to someone on the transplant team.  Monday will be here before you know it.  wink

My husband had the same restless leg problem before his transplant - honestly - they didn't want to give him anything - he was on a prescribed sleeping pill which helped him relax in the evening....but you really need to talk to the transplant coordinator before you do anything.....well except feed him bananas.  Take care.  Pam

He has been using C pap machine but they ordered him a new one and changed some of the settings. I called the Transplant team and have left a message. His coordinator is out till next year...yep that's right next year now did they let us know about this, nope!! We now have the supervisor of the coordinators so maybe now things will get a lot better. We've had trouble with coordinators in the past. One complained and made it clear he was getting another job and then the one we have now just would never call back. Maybe she is ill or something but that doesn't help us when we need help. Our primary care doctor has tried to contact them numerous times and she says I can't believe how hard it is to deal with them....I don't know if this is normal but it's frustrating, our questions are simple and it wouldn't taken long to just answer them and we would be on our way!! We now have the supervisor so we shall see!!

DDmom, that's not good the way his care is being handled.  You should have at least been notified that his Coordinator is not there.  Where is your transplant center?  I wouldn't say this is normal.  Members of my transplant team have called and returned calls in a very prompt manner, both to my home phone and cell phone.  I have no complaints at all about any of them...except maybe that my hepatologist doesn't want to answer questions or discuss anything without seeing me face-to-face...but I understand the reasons for that.

Perhaps his C-Pap machine needs to have its settings adjusted again.

His Transplant Center is Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, California...He has had the same Hepatologist for years and followed him from another Transplant hospital where we never had this problem. We have talk to the staff about this before and got nowhere. We have tried to make an appointment with the doctor to discuss any problems and they will not schedule one for 6 months because the doctor is so busy. Hopefully with the new Coordinator things will get better or we need to make a decision about changing Transplant Centers. I will call them Monday morning and try to get things figured out.

RLS is of neurological origin and involves an irresistible urge to move limbs, especially legs.  They can jerk around during sleep, affecting how much sleep a person gets.
