Update on my dad

Hi everyone I have not been on here in awhile, I just thought I would check in and give an update on my dad. So far he has been hanging in there staying out of the hospital, He has been having a hard time with fluctuations with his weight. One day he might gain 10 lbs then the next lose it. He currently is taking 3 lasix a day I think the 40mg tablets. the strange thing about it is when he has a chest xray done every couple of months or so they say there is allot of fluid built up around his lungs like before the tips, though since he is not having a hard time breathing they do not want to do anything, they are afraid if they poke him with anything to remove the fluid he risks infection again. So pretty much just battling that issue. And him being very tired and run down all the time. I did also have a question that I was hoping someone might be able to help answer? My dads Meld score the last time the Dr gave it to us was I think an 11, wich was roughly a couple of months ago. Does that say much about a persons life expectancy or not? Any how glad I was able to get on here again this sight is very helpful. Thanks Brad

Hey, Brad!  Good to see you back here and to know that your dad is pretty much stable.  A MELD of 11 is quite a way from transplant.  Transplant is usually not done until a patient's MELD reaches the 20s (higher in some areas.)  I do agree with the docs about not poking him again.

It is "normal" for a liver patient to feel exhausted all the time.  Since I've been going through transplant evaluation, I also feel "run down," as I'm not getting the rest I need or eating the way I normally do--in fact, not at all most days that I'm fasting for a test, until I get home...and then it's likely to be a WW frozen dinner.

I had to laugh at the surgeon's report after our consult, saying I was "occasionally" tired.  Those words NEVER came out of my mouth.  I said "chronically fatigued," which I definitely am.  There's no "occasionally" about it.

Hi Connie thanks for the reply. So I was wondering do you know if its possible for a person with advanced Liver disease to live a few years. I hear the words 90 days with a Meld score of 11 is scary I know each person is different. its just really hard to get clear answers from the Dr.

Everyone is different.

Many with liver disease get relatively well for long periods with healthy lifestyle.
