Something new, always! lol!! I have been having trouble getting Anna to take a bath, sometimes she will go as much as a month. She just doesnt care anymore, I dont guess. Well today, the main lady over Hospice came to meet us and see how everything was going. She noticed the odor that Anna had and asked about her bathing, if I needed help. I told her that I can give her the baths, but she doesnt want them. Of course she wants me to talk her into it and to set up the aides coming. Which I think is a good idea. I guess it embarrassed Anna because she asked for a bath. When I went to wash under her belly she screamed out. So I raise her skin up and she has a very bad skin infection with a horrible smell. That is where the odor is coming from. Her breath also smells about the same. I know that is from her liver, but wow. She is also having the liver flapping now too.
Back to the subject though, lol has any of you heard of this rash? I read online about it and looked at photos and it seems to be what she has. Do you think I should call the hospice nurse and have her come out just to take a look. I am not sure if she needs a special ointment or not and all I have is barrier cream here.

Natty-so sorry to hear that your MIL has to suffer one more thing. I had never heard this term before, so I had to google it. Along with looking at photos. Kind of like a wicked diaper rash between the abdominal folds? Looks very painful. I think a call to the GP for some sort of treatment. After that, maybe some anti chafing cream? Baby powder? Or lifting her tummy and laying an absorbent cotton cloth...that would prevent the accumulation of moisture? Keep us updated. Bless you for all you do for your MIL.

Thanks Emma, now along with it she is having a HE spell today. Always something I am going to call her hospice nurse and let her know what is going on.

Natalie, did you mean impetigo?  This is a skin infection caused by staph, and sometimes strep.  She needs to be on specific antibiotics.  To help clear up the site of infection, try OTC zinc oxide.  It is a thick white paste.  Place a gauze pad loosely over it.  But if hospice tells you differently, of course follow their advice.  They deal with this type of thing a lot.

In regard to the baths, if she simply won't take one at least every other day, use baby wipes to clean her, paying special attention to the folds of skin such as under her belly if she has an overhang, and under her breasts.  These places are moist and a breeding ground for bacteria.

Hey Connie, no it is intertrigo. The hospice nurse is going to bring her a cream and recommended a daily bath until it heals and at least every other day after it heals. If not, like you said make her let me wash her down there. She also wants to keep a wash cloth on each side to absorb the moisture. Hopefully it works.

Natty, that's a new term for me...have never run across it.  If she doesn't already wear cotton panties, that would also be advisable.

She has to wear depends because she can longer control her bowels. I think that adds to it.

Hi Natty

Sounds like thrush which flourishes in skin folds, It is caused by candida albicans and can get very smelly and very sore.
Bathing is the best way of controlling it. Ihave seen it msny times in nursing homes, unfortunately.

The nurse gave us some anti fungal cream. I hope that with bathing and that it will help. Thanks Mandy :)
