Hello I am new to this forum, but i have a question i hope some one can answer. My husband has been diagnosed with cirrohis and also hemecromatosis which is to much iron in his blood. The Dr. said he possibly will have 2 mts if he will agree to have blood drawn off at least 2 times a week. His kerritin level is supposed to be 30 but his is already 5,010. He has been confused,sleeps alot in the days not much at night,stomack filling with fluid and hurts in his legs really bad. Can anyone pls tell me what is next i'm so scared don't know what to expect next. Thanks and God Bless to you all.

I am sorry that your husband is suffering from liver disease. There are many caring people on this forum. They will all be glad to help you.

Please read the educational folder at the top of the posts. It has lots of information about liver disease, not just hepatitis. Educate yourself as much as possible about liver disease.

Does your husband see a hepatologist (liver specialist)? What is your husband's age? Is he taking diuretics for the fluid retention? Is he taking lactulose? How did he get the cirrhosis?

He should have NO alcohol, limit his salt and fluid intake, no beef, and eat a healthful diet...plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. No canned...too much salt.

I am sure one of the moderators will be along to welcome you soon.

Please post often and ask as many questions as you need to. The more information you can give about your husband, folks will be able to give better information to you.

I too am sorry to hear your husband has liver disease.

We have folks posting here with several underlying causes for their problems--auto immune hep, HCC (heptocellular carcinoma), Hep C, but I've never seen a post on hemachromatosis. However regardless of underlying issues, the symptoms of cirrhosis are the same pretty much

My mike had a liver transplant in may 2011. He has Hep C, had HCC, and alcoholic cirrhosis. He was pretty sick

about 5 years ago they diagnosed him with hemachromatosis also. His counts were over 5000 also. With all his other stuff he couldn't believe one more thing went wrong!

They set up a treatment plan to draw off blood twice a week. But befire imPlementing the treatment they tested him again and he was in normal range

As hemochromatosis can be familial we had his daughter and grandchildren tested as well as Mike. One of the grandchildren carries the gene recessively. But. Mike does not. The diagnosis must have been wrong!

Also just a few years later mike was da vetoing anemic and had to take iron pill after years of eliminating iron rich foods from his diet!

We also have a friend with this diagnosis. He says the #1 treatment to avoid the bleeding from varices is NO ALCOHOL. He us 60 and is lifelong sober! His dad passed from a bleed.

I hope his condition stabilizes.

Hello, Godsgift, and welcome to the forum. A diagnosis of hemochromatosis is pretty rare here. Cirrhosis, however, is not. The other posters gave the right instructions for dealing with this. I would imagine that the doctors want your husband to avoid iron rich foods. Also, if he takes a multivitamin, make sure that it doesn't contain iron. Let the doctors take care of that diagnosis, and you follow the low-salt, fresh fruits and vegetables, no beef diet for the cirrhosis. And NO alcohol. Cirrhosis cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped in its tracks and the progression be slowed.

As Emma mentioned, be sure to read the information in the folder at the top of the page entitled Hepatitis Resources. There is a lot of good information in there about the stages of liver disease, etc. It is not just about viral hepatitis (hepatitis means inflammation of the liver.)

Also, as others have said, the more information you can give us, the better we will be able to help you.
