confused   Today we were getting ready to go to the VA . .hubby had a dentist appt. and I had a caregivers meeting. I was getting ready to change clothes, hear a loud noise in the living room, went to investigate and hubby was in a seizure. Tried to bring him out of it . .called 911. he came out of the seizure . . BP was 55/35!! He's back in the hospital. It took 6 hours to get his BP under control, it was up and down. The diagnosis at the ER is that the whole episode is from Ascites. I'm going to research it further.

He has only been out of the hospital 10 days. He also had the same thing happen when he was sitting on the toilet . . they said it was due to straining to have a BM!! I told them he doesn't strain he takes Lactulose . . they got him stable and sent him home. His episode the last hospital visit, 2 weeks ago, he was dehydrated, but did not go into a seizure. He is not dehydrated now. Whew!! I am exhausted . . mentally for sure!!

Debbie-so sorry that your hubby had the seizure. What do they do to raise the blood pressure? What are the dangers surrounding the low bp? What does it have to do with ascites? Sorry for all the questions...I am trying to learn to. I am not sure if I am understanding correctly...is he still in the hospital or did he get released? You take care too. I hope this gets under control soon.

(((Debbie))), I know how scared you must have been. My husband developed focal seizures. It just effected his left arm. If they told us what caused them ...I don't remember now. They put him on Keppra.........they had to up the dosage a couple of times to keep the seizures at bay.

Is the hospital he is at the transplant hospital were his hepatologist is? If not you may want to call them and let them know.

So sorry to read about this! My hubby started having seizures a few years ago, and truthfully, they do not know the cause, and they don't want to specifically say it is because of his liver disease, but say it probably is a contributing factor. His are grand mal seizures, so his whole body would have convulsions. We finally got him on the right seizure medication, and it has kept the seizures at bay, but the down side is that it really affects him cognitively and his memory is really bad!

He is still in the hospital here in FL. His TP hospital is Pittsburgh PA, VA. The ER people said the seizures were due to Ascites . . his Gastro doctor doesn't think so. I talked to her today. So, she told me to make sure they do some basic neuroligy test on him. so, I talked to the nurse and she is going to talk to the floor doctor in the AM.I wouldd not consider his a grand mal seizure . . his teeth wer chattering and he was not able to hold his head up, nd his pupils were huge, and he stared right through me . . it was very scary.

They took 5 liters of water off him today! He is not dehydrated so he feels pretty good this time. He has the shakes real bad!!

The TP coordinator in PA reviews his status every month now. Travel arrangements are set up for ER transport via an airbus . . he will go to the dentist as soon as I can get him in there after he is realeased.

I am kind of weepy right now. Good news from my friend in Orlando . . she is coming to stay with us and help with Phil, so I can continue to work!! I also was given information about the Tampa Bay hepatitis Foundation!! I plan on going 2nd tuesday of every month . .great resources and sharing!!

Emma, they give him an IV med to bring his BP up . . it was as low as 88/60 today?! I'll get the name of it tomorrow. Low BP he could go into heart failure/cardiac arrest. I don't know if it has anything to do with the ascites . . I'm getting different answers from the Gastro and the ER. I'll let ya know as soon as I feel comfortable with an answer. I ask alot of questions too . . I share so everyone here can learn too. This site has taught me sooo . . much and given me sooo... much hope :)

Still in FL Carol . . we're still kickin!! I work Wed. and Thur., and right to the hospital after. He just got home. I'm really worrried tho . . his drain hole from his tap is leaking water . . it looks like tears, but it is one tear about every 5 seconds. He soaks the bandage in 30 minutes. Its clear fluid, but it has been 2 days and 6 hours since it was done . . should it still be draining so easliy?

I think you'll get some posts Deb...others have mentioned leaking at other times...maybe check the Search. Maybe it's better to leak out?

I recall reading about leaking here too. I think I remember someone saying they used a sanitary napkin to absorb the fluid. I am not sure about how much is "normal" or what you need to watch for. Give your doctor a call...it's Friday afternoon...then you will have less to worry about over the weekend.

You you have large gauze pads? Roll one up and press it directly on the paracentesis site. Apply pressure for at least 30 seconds and then tape it in place. Have him lay flat or nearly flat and then place a firm pillow in close proximity to the bandaged site and a little beneath him. Have him roll over onto this and hold it tight against himself. He may need to double the pillow. He should remain this way for at least 30 min. This should help to stop the drainage. If it doesn't, contact the doctor. Someone will be on-call for him if he is not available--or you can leave a message and have the doc or on-call doc get back to you.

Are you taking his temp every 4 hours or so? Remember, if it gets as high as 101, get him to the ER.

SW, it's good that his temp is only 99. He shouldn't be moving around. Is he still taking his diuretics? The 5 liters they drained is not a lot. There is more in there. Has the doctor mentioned fluid restriction? Is he on an antibiotic?

You're a genius! I did what you said and the draining stopped! He is being still and just watching TV. I just checked it and it is dry as a bone....Yes, he took his diuretics today, but no, they did not put him on an antibiotic. Should they have? If they tests the fluid and finds any infection I'm assuming then they would put him on one? The Doctor has had him on the sodium restriction and fluid restriction of 2 liters for about the last month. I told him if he is compliant then hopefully the fluid won't come back as fast...He is in agreement.
I'm going to keep watching him...

i made him lay flat . . and it seemed to slow down. He has been in a bed for 4 days and not real receptive to it, but . .
He is also on antibiotics, so I'll keep an eye on it.

I went and got some pads, and found some waterproof surgical bandages from my back surgery . . I fixed him up . .he is finally laying down with mild pressure and a very absorbent (super) pad!! If he'll do that all night, change it out and do it again tomorrow, maybe we will have the problem solved!! if not ,back to the hospital!! thank the lord it's only 15 - 20 min. away!!

There is a divine irony in that the recommendation comes from Connie, on her own adventure this week!

He is back in the hopsital leak did not stop. They are going to send him back to radiology tomorrow . . possible re tap, and try to get him sealed up. He is in good health really . . sodium is good, BP is normal for him, not lethargic . . even his attitude is good. Lets hope he can come home, not leaking and in good health, mentally and physically!!

Deb--Mike is good. He is likely going to Ct next weekend for one of the grands birthday parties...9 years old. He tires easily and doesn't have much stamina...but he's taking his life back!

Connie has labs and appointments on Monday at Mayo and promises to get a message to us afterwards when she can.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Remember I promised Connie, y'all'd be good!

Hubby is home . .they gave him body glue, a bag for the fluid to leak in if it does leak. If it continues to leak, he will need a stich put in!! So, until then . . maybe I can get a few minutes to rest before he becons me again!!
