Is there a relation between Diabetes and Cirrhosis? My husband is ESLD, is diabetic, he tested tonight and he is in mid 400's. He will be seeing his diabetes doc very soon but I was just wondering......any info?

Roxie47,
WOW...that seems very high if you are talking blood sugar test. At 500, they wanted to put my hubby in hospital and immediately gave him a shot to bring down the blood sugar. Does your husband take insulin shots or pills? Has he been taking them or possible he forgot to take them? My hubby has ESLD and oftentimes can't remember to take his meds. My hubby said if his was this high he would take a diabetes pill to bring it down. Also, I think it depends on if he tested right after he ate or on an empty stomach. (My hubby only tests first thing in the morning before eating.) My hubby gets concerned if his is above 150. Perhaps others will come on and comment too. I am not a Dr., but have been helping my hubby monitor his diabetes for about
12 years or so. I know that some people's blood sugar readings vary wildly, but for us this would be way high and cause us concern. Hope this helps,,,don't mean to alarm you when I know how hard it is to be the caretaker and hard to know what is the "right" thing to do. Hope others chime in here.

Hello Roxie,
Yes there is definitely a connection. I know that it was talked about
before but for the life of me I can not remember what causes the diabetes. Google it in the
search bar above on the right. It should bring up any posts that discuss it.
When my husband was being treated for his cirrhosis, at some point someone put on his chart that he was diabetic.........which he wasn't. It took an act of congress to get that taken off his chart. They kept retesting him for it to make sure. When I questioned the transplant coordinator on how it got put in his records in the first place. She told me that it was pretty common for cirrhotic patients to develop diabetes, so someone wasn't being very careful with the notes, probably one of the many doctors that he was seeing.
Take care.......thoughts and prayers......

Thanks for the replies, his numbers this morning are in the mid 300's, will be trying to get him into docs very soon today. That number is after taking 2 metformins last night. The problems never end, Thanks again, Pat

Mike did not have diabetes before transplant, but has been on insulin for 6 months post. WE hope he can get off it when the meds are reduced more. His sugar tests about
130-300 depending. And he uses a sliding scale pen.
Ron is about
a year post transplant (his wife, Pam, posts as rcmoonpie). He was diabetic before and after. They may have some posts for you to look at.
You can search on her penname and then page through her posts or look up diabetes and hep c and see what you get.
Good to have you with us.
Carol
