slow wound and auto immune hepatitis

my mom has a slow healing wound from ostomy site been healing for around 1 year and 3 months still around 2 cm in depth and constantly battling mersa infection post op with antibiotics on and off. recently told she has auto immune hepatitis and i am wondering if the treatment of steroids for hepatitis interfere with wound healing? I have been packing her wounds at home and the dr wants to use a kalypto vac for wound but i am so scared because evrytime i pack wound it bleeds bad and also she has sensitivity to the silver packing and the instructions say not to use if she has these problems. any suggestions or personal stories are greatly appreciated

Hello, Rose, and welcome to the forum. Prednisone and other steroid medications do inhibit wound healing. Of course, your mom's bouts with MRSA do not help. I am having a similar problem post-liver transplant: Wounds in one of the incision sites have opened up and are very, very slow to heal. I'm on Prednisone. A wound vac was mentioned as a possibility, but since it's only been about 5 wks., we are waiting to see if the wounds will heal on their own. In your mom's case, since it's been a year, she might want to seriously consider trying the wound vac.

Hello Rose,

Welcome!  So I searched a bit and on one community Q & A site, a nurse wrote in with info about something called Oasis Wound Matrix.  You should Google it and speak with your mom's doc about it.  It is expensive but seems to help with wounds that won't heal.  Also, there are different foams you can use with the Kalypto vac that aren't the silver based ones.  Again, don't hesitate to consult with mom's doctors. 

The pred itself doesn't technically affect wound healing but because it is immunosuppressant, her body could take longer to heal.

So while I don't have any personal experience with delayed wound healing, there seems to be options out there.  Please speak to her doc about the silver sensitivity and using different foams as well as the Oasis, if he thinks it might help...and you have the financial ability to cover the costs.

Hi Rose

Welcome! I have experience of slow healing and bigger scars during medication with pred. But if you need it you dont have so many options and it will heal eventually.

Hi Rose,

  Wanted to welcome you.  I don't have experience in wound healing, so I'll leave that advice for others.  We have been lucky to not have to deal with that. Welcome.
