Can a person with Hep-c's organ be used? I have always opted to be an organ donor on my Driver License but I was wondering if my organs would even be *usable* since I have the virus.

I know that a hep C liver can be used. When I was awaiting transplant, I was told to accept a hep C liver if it became available, as I already have the virus. However, they later decided that since I have genotype 1a (the most difficult to treat), that they would not give me a hep C liver. I ended getting a pristine young person's liver. Perhaps if a patient with hep C is in need of a kidney or a corneal implant, they could accept a donor organ with hep C.

We were told that a patient near death could get a hep c organ rather than die. A second organ tx could be scheduled if appropriate.

I have been registered as a organ donor since I was 16, then registered as a bone marrow donor about
20 years ago. Every 5 years the bone marrow folks call to ask me if I still want to stay on the list. The last time they called, I told them I had Hep C. They said they had no problem with that. I suppose it is because they zap the bone marrow with radiation before injecting it in the recipient. That would sterilize the marrow and rid it of the virus.
