Tigerboy,
Welcome to this forum. So sorry your Mom is ill.
In answer to your questions: With all the warnings in the public arena on the health problems of smoking, it is reasonable to believe it is not good for your Mom to breath second hand smoke. But...I doubt you are going to convince your dad or sister to change their smoking habits for your Mom's health at this point. Also, same with eating habits. Good luck, but sounds like you are fighting an uphill battle.
I DO NOT LET anyone smoke around my husband and while at home we ate fresh fruits veggies and no red meat. Now that he is in the nursing home, his diet sucks..they feed based on cost and it is cheaper and more convenient to feed processed and pkged foods. I raise hell about it and take him lots of fresh fruit. I am not happy about it, but have compromised for the other aspects of care he is getting.
Do you really think if you present your dad and sister with a study that says second hand smoke is bad for a person with ESLD, they will change their behavior? If so, it's worth doing some on line research. If not, save your efforts and spend that time with your Mom doing something you both enjoy.
One of the things the transplant team told my husband was that for him to even be considered for transplant, he must be compliant with medication and proceed as they directed. (He was not very comfortable with this.) From reading your posts sounds like your Mom (and family) would have trouble with compliance ( ex. Mom won't take lactalose) and thus, Dr.'s may look at it like, why even explore this option if we already know compliance will be a problem.
Sorry to be so blunt. But..I find Dr's don't have much patience when patients doen't work with Dr. or family can't/or won't be supportive of all that needs to be done to keep patient as healthy as possible. There are way more people that need livers than livers to be had.
Don't mean to offend you in any way. All above is just my opinion.
ESLD is a progressive disease. As my hubby's Dr put it, "Quality of life will get worse and worse, without a transplant, and some will not be able to get a transplant and even for those that do, there is no guarantee for them, either."
Take care tigerboy and enjoy your Mom when she has a good day. There will probably be fewer and fewer of them. Best to you.
