Just got the test result from OHSU in Portland, Or. Chucks genotype for his hepatitus is 1A.  Can anyone tell me what kind of treatment can be done for this type?  Any info will be appreciated.  Thanks, Pat

Hi, Pat! Genotype 1a is the most difficult type to treat and also the most common in the USA. When considering treatment, he should ask about the new 3-drug treatment for types 1a and 1b that is having a 70-90% clearance rate. This treatment adds a protease inhibitor to the combo of inferon and ribavirin.

Thanks Connie, I've been doing some research on this and prognosis looks iffy. We will be seeing the doc in the next 2 weeks, is there anything I should be asking him? What test results should I know about? How long would treatment last, and how ill will Chuck get. Thanks

Whichever treatment he does, there will be side effects. However, the new triple-drug therapy is said to be rough. I've not read of any poor outcomes from this treatment. The protease inhibitor, along with the ribavirin and interferon, are taken together for 12 weeks. Then the protease inhibitor is stopped and the patient continues with the combo treatment for 24 weeks...or in some cases 48. If only the combo treatment is used, it will be for 48 wks.

As far as labs, you should be watching his ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin, and PT. To make sure his kidney function is okay, check the BUN and creatinine.

Is he on any medications now? How about BP meds or diuretics?

His meds are, propranolol 20 mg, 3x day, omeprazole 20mg,  1x day, glipizide 10mg, 1x day, metforman 1000mg, 2xday they did have him on spironolact 25mg 1x day but it was elevating his potassium levels too high so he is off that now.  His diabetes is constantly jumping around.  Thanks  Pat

Okay, so no diuretics are being taken if they took him off the Aldactone. I was taken off, too, for the same reason, but continue on Lasix. So the drugs he is now on are to manage his BP and diabetes.
