Presurgery question

  I have a renal mass on my rt. kidney and will be having surgery Wed. 4-25-12. My que. is that my instructions tell me that I am to stop OTC suppliments and I'm assuming that vitamins are included. I'm just curious since I have cirrhosis.hcv. I neglected to ask my PCG and have stopped taking the vitimans. I'm guessing at this point that it's too close to the oper. that it wouldn't make any difference or would it?

  Thanks Mamma Lamma! Actually feeling fine but I was concerned about the vits. cause I know there imp. for people with cirrhosis and this is the longest I've ever went without them.

Worthit, the problem is that they don't know what might be in OTC supplements that might interfere with anesthesia or other drugs they may give you. Did they say anything about aspirin or blood thinners? Usually, they don't want a surgery patient to have those, either, for about a week prior to surgery.

You still may need some help after your discharge, so don't be afraid to ask for it. I usually cook some casserole type dishes like 3-Bean Chili before going in for surgery. I break it down to individual portions and freeze them.

It might be muscle spasms and could be caused by their positioning of you on the surgical table, plus length of time for the surgery. I had tremendous mid-back pain after transplant--I mean, off the charts pain--but CT showed nothing and the pain went away in about a month's time.

I wanted to ask about your multivitamin: Are you taking one WITHOUT iron? Liver patients should only take the ones w/o iron, to prevent possible iron overload. Also wondering if they just excised the mass or if they removed the entire affected kidney?

Glad to hear they got the cancer OUT. And that you are feeling a bit better.

Mike had terrible muscle spasms with the ESLD.  They would wake him and he would try to stand to walk them off and sometimes fell right down. One day he was on the floor an hour before I found him and it scared me to death. Hejust didn't have the strengh to get himself up. We got him a monitor, on of those things you put around you neck, that calls my cell phone if he gets in trouble. It isn't on of those monitored by a service twith a monthly fee. But if I don't answer it calls 911 dispatcher.  Even after a year, he wears it at home if I am NOT with him.  He as only called me once, but I was glad he had it on that day!  He'd set off the house alarm by mistake.

BTW, he hasn't had a single once since transplant!
