My ALT and AST levels are getting high with Treatment of Hep C

hi all,

This is my first post. I had started my treatment one and a half month ago for Hep C at the time of starting my
ALT was 69 and AST was 130 and after one and half month of treatment I went through tests again to check my
Viral load (which went considerably low from 180000 IU/ml to 2346 IU/ml) but worrisome thing is my AST and ALT levels went up ALT 69 to 120 and AST 130 to 180. Is it normal or I am gonna die sooner then I think?

Hi, Iffy, and welcome to the forum! I think it's probably normal since you are actually exposing your system to a poison. I'm post transplant, but still have hep C with no treatment just yet. My AST is 117. ALT is closer to normal at 49. My docs say it's the hep C causing this. The liver enzyme levels are not indicative of pending death, not at these relatively low numbers. But contact your hepatologist about it. He may want to change the dosage a bit.

well I don't know what you mean by 3 part cocktail or 2, all I understand that you wanted to know about meds I am taking for my hep C. well I have genotipo 3b. so I am only on Interferon and Ribavirin. Sorry if I understood you wrong.

Commonly known as "the combo" is what you are taking for treatment of hep C. The new treatment consists of a 3rd drug, thus the "three-drug" treatment. This new treatment is targeted at those with genotype 1a (the most common type in the US), so it's understandable that with genotype 3 you are on the combo. The combo must be taken for 48 wks.

but my doctor this treatment will only be for 6 months not 12 months if I had Genotype 1 then might be the treatment of 48 weeks would have been considered. Well I'll ask my doctor again. Thanks for replying

You're taking the cocktail (ribavirin/interferon) so my question is answered. Having genotype 3b is more easily conquered than what most people in the U.S. have; 1a. Good luck with the treatment.

Someone who has taken the combo will have to answer that. Or cal your doctor's office.
