My blood type is B+. For over 3 years, my MELD score hovered between 12 and 17. Then it went to 18, my legs were so swollen that I was hospitalized for a week. My pcp knocked 29 pounds of fluid out of me with IV lasix, albumen and another diuretic. I got out of the hospital on a Sunday and had an appointment with my pcp on Tuesday. He mentioned that my MELD was now 24, though it didn't occur to me that I was close to a possible transplant. The next morning I was on my way to MGH in Boston for a mandatory lecture on transplants. As I was on my way, I got the call. A couple of hours later, I was being prepped and the transplant was begun about 7 pm. I never was aware of how high on the list I was. In the end, I was #3, but the liver was from a child and I'm thin, so they jumped me over #1 and #2. Be well.
