have not posted lately as I suffered a spontaneous rupture of my spleen Jan 26. Was in hospital approx. 45 days and rehab hospital for a week.
Was offered a high risk liver when my meld increased to 23 in the hospital. Northwestern rejected the liver. Now, my meld is back to 18.
After ths near death experience, I am really thinking of multiple listing at Mayo in Fla and Indiana University Health in Indianapolis .
when I went in for my followup, my hep's first words to me were. " you survived?"
Only good thing to come from this harrowing experience is that I lost 40 lbs and am no longer obese.

It's always comforting to get that " Your still alive ? " comment particularly from a doctor .

Susie, so I'm guessing that they took out your spleen? Are you on any medications for it? I know that the spleen is instrumental in producing cells that stave off infection, so without one you will be more
open to illness and infection.
I agree--get listed elsewhere, too.
Hugs,
Connie

Connie, They took out the whole spleen. I have not been prescribed any new meds.
My meld as of Tuesday is back down to 17. My creatinine was less than one, inr was 1.8, bilirubin went down 2.9, the lowest it has been in years. My platelets were 172,000 the highest they have been in years. My albumin dipped to 1.8
Am scheduled for home physical therapy for a month. have been getting round with the walker pretty well.
Ziffle and David, I was taken aback by what my hep said. Did not know I was THAT sick. Of course, I don 't remember much about
my 2 weeks in ICU.

Some docs have a sense of humor, sort of weird/sick humor. That's my pcp. He's direct and I appreciate it. And I enjoy a weird sense of humor.

Wow Susie - you really are lucky to be alive! The amount of blood that flows into the spleen is tremendous. Even a small laceration of the spleen, like what can occur from a blow to the abdomen or during a car accident, can cause a large blood loss. To have your spleen spontaneously rupture could potentially cause a HUGE loss of blood very quickly. So yes, you are one lucky lady! Did they tell you how much blood they had to give you during surgery?
I am so glad to hear that you are feeling better. C:

I was given 4 units of blood in ER and 6 during surgery. I had some additional units in recovery.
yes, I know I am very lucky to be alive. My BP dropped to 60/40 in the ER.
