Hello,
My husband passed away 3 years ago supposedly from alcoholic liver cirrhosis (he was a wonderful man and a big substance misuser). I was his caregiver for the last 5 years of his life. I am still not over his death and have mental health issues because of it.
(I am still trying to make sense of this. My husband refused to stop consuming alcohol because he felt that as an adult he had a right to do it. He actually died rather suddenly).
Now, my late father was a very heavy drinker most of his life and never developed liver problems. I myself was a very heavy drinker for many years (I still consume moderately) and I have no liver problems. I just underwent an 11-hour breast reconstruction surgery and was told that my liver function is fine--I am 61 years old, too.
This seems so unfair!! Is it genetics, or some kind of idiosyncratic biochemical reaction to alcohol and other toxins? Does gender play a role?
Please advise,
Lily N.
