Does anyone know of a pain medication that I would be able to take due to chronic pain that will not affect my liver?  Doctors have had me on morphine, Hydrocodone with vicoprofen and peroscet.  I also have rheumatoid arthritis that is making life unbearable.

Welcome to the forum JP.

Your docs need to prescribe appropriate meds.

But the conventional wisdom of this forum is to limit any OTC meds. Again, take your guidance from your hepatologist.

Do you have liver disease, or just worried?

i am at stage 3 of 4 of having cirrhosis of the liver and I have not been successful with OTC meds. Thank you for your input.

Jassypapa, welcome to the forum. I have taken Lortab for years. I was on 7.5 mg all that time and just recently had the dosage switched to 10 mg, which I'm finding to be more effective. It has 500 mg of APAP. BTW, it's spelled Percocet.

Are the drugs you mentioned what you are currently taking? Does the Vicoprofen have ibuprofen in it? If so, that's a no-no. You can have acetaminophen, but not ibuprofen.

Other than what you have mentioned, I can't think of any other drugs that would help you, but I'm not a doctor. Do you have a rheumatologist for your RA? I know there is special medication to deal with that. Aside from acetaminophen, you shouldn't take any OTC meds without your doctor's official okay.

My doctor gave my oxycodone without acetaminophen. She slowly increased my level until we found a dose that reduced pain. Oxycodone is safe in most patients, and is actually one of the recommended pain killers for severe pain. I have a torn disc and 2 herniated disc in my thoracic spine that cuase alot of nerve pain. I also do physical therapy 2 days a week.

You still need to be carefuly with Oxycodone, especially if you are non-compensated. It can lead to increased HE and smaller doses usually can do the job since your liver does not break down things as well.

As others mentioned though, see your phsyician and hep and they should be able to find something that works and keep it in the safe range for you.

        hi jassypapa,     has your dr. discussed the use of methadone.  opiates are more liver friendly than rx strength anti inflamatories, or otc. it is once a day and has little tolerance build up(my opinion). i used it for opiate addiction in the early 80s.  if you follow the protocal its safe.

Thank all of you for your words...I am going to talk to my Dr. about Marinol.I just moved to Arkansas from California things are alot different here... For the last few days i haven't been able to really do anything,just so tired scool

Marinol? It is my understanding that this "marijuana in a pill" is for poor appetite, not pain. At any rate, I wish you good luck with it and let us know what your doctor recommends.
