question about Bactrim and Pentamidine...

My mom was told to discontinue the Bactrim...they think it "might" be contributing to her low platelets. They want to start Pentamidine, which is an inhalation treatment given in place of Bactrim. Can anyone share any information or experience with Pentamidine?

Oh jeez...the Pentamidine caused him to have pancreatitis? Is that a side effect of the Pentamidine??? I believe the TC said the Pentamidine is an inhalation treatment...is that correct???

The transplant coordinator said the Pentamidine would be given once a month.

How is his blood work? How are his liver enzymes?

You're jumping to conclusions. Calm down. Mae mentioned a number of changes to her brothers regime, none of which may be the cause of his pancreatitis. I hope you're not letting your mother see how freaked out you are. The last thing she needs is worrying, because you are letting your fears run wild. Be happy she had a transplant and has a second chance at life. Right now you need to show strength for her sake, if not yours.

I am trying my best to stay positive, but its so difficult. In the first few weeks after transplant, my mom has dealt with water retention which was treated by water pills, then diahrea, then a fever, then needed an infusion and now the low platelet issue. It's like a roller coaster. I just feel terrible that she has to go thru this.

Almost everyone has problems of one sort or another after transplant. I've certainly had my share and am still going through them--and not "little" things. I've had lots of lab fluctuations and med changes and change in dosages. That's nothing compared to being opened up again 4 mos. after transplant; having several hernia repairs; tremendous edema in lower extremities with blood blisters that opened up, and I was trailing blood behind me; pleural effusion with 1 liter of fluid taken from my rt. lung; opening of a silver-dollar sized spot in my midriff, requiring mesh removal and wound vac application for 2 wks., now with zinc oxide and dressing changes twice a day until a skin graft later this month. I could go on. And you have read what others have gone through or are still experiencing, like Mae's brother.

But the point is, it does nobody any good to worry. It's a waste of energy that could be put to better use.

I agree with Mae that you should give us a name. It's too bad you labeled yourself as Worried Daughter. Concerned would be a better word. Your mom got a transplant! Be patient and give her time. It's a very major surgery. I know David said it took him 3 yrs. to feel almost "normal" again. But he has SVR to hep C. I am still active...and that means problems.
