I had labs done on Monday, first time in 3 months. Was told not to expect normal yet, but they wanted to see another drop. I was only worried about 4 numbers, the rest normalized out 3 months ago.

AST 92 up from 85 NORMAL=40

ALT 73 down from 110 NORMAL=56

Bilirubin 1.8 down from 2.2 NORMAL=1.9

INR 1.4 down from 1.8 NORMAL=1.2

Creatin 0.9 same last time NORMAL 1.1 to 0.75 I believe

I would like to get my INR down to normal range. Calculating MELD is weird though, because every lab has different normal levels. I believe MELD figures 1.4 is normal for Bili and 1.1 is normal for INR. So I think the lab values can skew your MELD, so right now my MELD is a 12 down from a 15 3 months ago.

I was wondering, will my AST and ALT always be high, even if they believe the cirrhosis will not progress any further. I was just curious if AST and ALT being elevated will be constant due to the cirrhosis that has developed due to the bile duct obstruction.

Syxx, I know that my liver enzymes will always be high due to the untreated hep C. I'm not sure about cirrhosis.

There is a RANGE of normal values, as follows:

Creatinine - 0.6-1.1

BUN - 6-21

ALT - 9-45

AST - 8-43

Bili - 0.1-1.1

INR - 0.8-1.1

Yes, different labs can be skewed, depending on what method they use. This could possibly affect the MELD score.

See my lab says normal bili is 1.9. It is just weird how the ranges fluctuate. I read this on bilirubin.

Either way, things still went down. His nurse told me that he is not expecting normal, but another decrease. So I guess as long as things keep going down towards normal I cannot complain.

I am not going to look anymore up on the internet, that got me in trouble in December when I thought I was pretty much dead. I just thought I would post my labs.

The numbers I gave are from Mayo's lab.

If your numbers are decreasing, that's good news!

I "think" when the AST and ALT are elevated, that indicates inflammation to the liver??? The positive thing...your lab results are trending toward normal...excellent news!!!

I know elevated ALT/AST levels mean inflammation usually. I also read a AST/ALT ratio close to 1 and an elevated AST is just signs of cirrhosis.

Basically I curious do I just have a new baseline or could they return to normal.

Since I did not have an appointment my doc sent me a letter. Said things look very good and he is very optimistic. Said he was curious why AST and ALT were high, but the bili and INR have shown great improvements and everything else has stablized. He is going to look into some of the meds I take and see if we need to change things around so my AST and ALT will lower and stabelize, but he said he likes seeing continued improvement.

In 3 months I have to see him, at that time I will have a CT before to check for cancer and how it looks compared to my CT last year.
