Morning all,

Greetings from Tunisia, North Africa, where I'm currentlY on holiday getting a vitamin d fix!

Despite staying in a five star hotel, I had a bit of a shock at breakfast this morning! I loaded my plate up with pastries (slapped wrist) and a bowl of pineapple. As I took a mouthful of the latter, a kind of fizzy sensation reached my tongue and I realised that, tasting like alcohol, the fruit had fermented. Needless to say, I spat it out and did not continue to eat any more but having been sober for over six months now, I can't help but feel a bit angry! I've been so careful not to let even the smallest bit of food cooked with alcohol cross my lips (chicken in wine) for example, primarily because I want absolute peace of mind that there is nothing that I am doing to make my liber disease worse. It may be silly and I'm hoping that you'll tell me that I've blown this out of proportion but at the moment I can't help but think that the hard work has been undone.....

Any thoughts are appreciated.

OK, let me be one here to tell you....You "have" blown this out of proportion, Chap. Avoiding all alcohol is what you did. As soon as you realized your food had alcohol in it, you put it aside. Can not feel guilty for something you had no control over...and you "choose" to stop eating immediately.

Get out there and enjoy that Vit D! Don't sweat that small stuff. Lucky you...North Africa!! Hugs, themiz

Like you, I have avoided alcohol. My docs have told me that drinking non alcoholic beer is fine. They and I are aware that there is a slight amount of alcohol left in this beer. My docs said it's too little to do any harm. I do not have more than a single beer in a day and usually drink no more than a couple bottles in a week. But then, I never had a problem with alcohol, before my Hep C and then later on a transplant.

Stop feeling bad about having a taste of alcohol. You weren't trying to do the wrong thing...

Alcohol in most recipes vaporizes immediately when cooked . Just do the best you can to avoid your demons , They'll always be there . Have a good time on your vacation .

Jamie, i'd be willing to sacrifice my time and join you on holiday to be your food tester. 5 star hotels with my own suite will suffice though I do require a personal valet or "lady-in-waiting". Thank you :)

We had a similar situation. Mike loves shakes and I saw him take the vanilla out of the cupboard to spruce it up...REALLY? Read the bottle I say and that was that! It shouldn't have been in the cupboard.

But I don't think of one taste of pineapple, then set aside is either a slip or permission to slip while on vacation. That would be the trick...DO NOT think of this as a slip!

Yep, don't blow it out of proportion. You did the right thing. It wasn't your fault. I was on vacation in the Bahamas when a similar thing happened to me. I was out to dinner with my b.f. at the time and ordered a "virgin" cocktail. One sip and I realized it had alcohol in it. I immediately flagged down the waiter and told him I wanted the one WITHOUT alcohol. At that point, I had been sober for 10 yrs., but still felt slightly guilty and joked that I would have to pick up another white chip.

ML, speaking of vanilla extract, I remember going into the cupboard when I was about 11 or 12 and taking swigs of it. I didn't know it contained alcohol...I just liked the way it made me feel. Which shows me that an alcoholic's brain works differently than those who don't have a problem. I'm aware that wine or beer burns off in cooking, but I still don't use it. It's the taste that could set me off. Cider vinegar and lemon juice is a good substitute for white wine.

Enjoy your vacation! You are probably too young to remember that jazz song, Night in Tunisa.

Thanks all! I certainly did not think of it as a slip on my part - nor would I allow myself to have a slip that precipitated any drinking!!! Realise now that it's not the end of the world! To be honest, I'm still pretty grossed out by alcohol anyway - I can smell it from a mile off normally and it makes me feel a bit sick.

Mae - I will remember your offer. Of course, I do require a certain etiquette from any travelling companion - particularly one who has her own 'lady-in-waiting'. Aside from ensuring all food and drink is safe to eat, you must be prepared to consume copious amounts of Earl Gray and know all about the correct behaviours of a lady! You must also perfect the Queen's English and be able to speak knowledgeably about the latest gossip circulating around the European Royal Courts. Cucumber sandwiches and boiled sweets are a must too.

a maternity test?! Wow, they'd have had to have gone some pretty extravagant lengths to pull that one off! But some excellent gossip! You're nearly there Mae - just the lemon sherbets to go now!!!

I actually heard some Americans referring to our language (meaning yours, as well as mine) as American on the flight back from Tunisia.......... a new one on me!

Thanks David, feeling better after 6 doses of the inhalation treatment, Pred bolus, Z pack and Pro-Air.

Now I can brush up on the English quirks in order to enter into the employ of Nice Chap :). Cucumber sandwiches were easy, must cut off the crust. Boiled sweets, now that requires a candy thermometer, not one of my favourite endeavours, but the gobstoppers are cooling as we speak.

Okay Nice Chap, on the sherbet flavour, let me guess. Limey?

Got it in one Mae. Now, you already have a stiff upper lip so you're half way to being British anyway; we've just got to get you to learn to cook bubble & squeak, to drive on the left, and to moan (and really MOAN) about the weather: "isn't it awful? the sky's been that colour for days without even a peek of let-up!", "that's it! we've had our summer. it lasted two weeks - that's a week longer than last year...". Of course, the final task will be to tease Connie with some lovely British spellings : "I hope you don't have oedema or varices in your oesophagus!" Also, actually being Welsh, there is a whole new language to learn to : Y Ddraig goch ddyry gychwyn (the red dragon will show the way!)

Foiled again.

I used "find language" and got tripped up.

I can pass a bit in French and German, but those OLDE languages are a mystery to me...

This was fun...now back to LIVER stuff.

And evidently, today is ASTHMA day also.

I actually like the proper English spellings.

Mae apparently missed my spelling lesson above (or was thumbing her nose at me, as Rick is wont to do) by putting that extra "r" in sherbet, which I AGAIN corrected.
