Hi Everyone,
Well I just got home from UK Medical Center. I drove Bill to the Er 2 1/2 hours from home on Friday night. At first I didn't think they were going to help him at all and send us home. But as it turns out they were great to him and still are being great . The whole staff are treating him so good. Our local hospital treats him like a druggie because of his Hep C. Even after he tells them he got Hep c from a tattoo.
Well onto what they are doing for him. Today they drained about 2 liters of fluid from his chest cavity. In 45 mins he lost 8 pounds I weighed him just before he was 210.6 and after he was 202. They didn't even get it all only wanted to get some off of him. They sent some of the fluid to the lab for testing. We hope they find out what the Atypical mesothelial cells in pleural fluid were the last time he had it done. Tomorrow they are going to drain his Belly, Which is so full also. If all goes well he will come home on Tuesday. And then we will go back there to the transplant center that is in the same building on Nov 5th.

Dorothy, good to see you and Bill are making progress with the new hospital. Sad but often true that it takes persistence to get proper medical attention. The old stigma of this disease being related always to drug abuse should be archaic in the medical community by now.

I read your post earlier and was to tired to reply. So happy he is getting the treatment he needs. I am sure he felt much relieved after being drained.

Well bill was able to come home from the hospital today. He is feeling a lot better. I don't think he looks to good but as long as he feels better. They got a total of 18 lbs of fluid off him. To me 18 lbs sounds like a lot. Has anyone ever had that much removed before? well just wanted to let you all know how things were going.

A month or so before they started doing paracentesis on me bi-weekly they pulled about 14 liters at one time. That comes out to about 4 gallons of ascites. I believe it comes to 32 lbs. It was like watching a beach ball deflate when they did the draining. My belly button (normally a innie) became a tangerine sized outty. When they inserted the needle for the drain tubing the fluid pressure forced a stream of fluid out like a squirt gun. Kinda upset the surgeon on call at the time, Ruined her new Nike's.

One thing you really need to be aware of is the problem with navel hernias. Mine started out as just fluid and was soft to the touch. One evening my abdomen had started filling up a little faster than normal and instead of fluid going into the belly button my intestine decided to push through it with the fluid. The hernia suddenly turned from a flesh tone to bright red and hot to the touch. My wife drove me to the ER before my intestine kinked and ruptured.

The hospital tried to push the intestine back into place but eventually emergency surgery had to be done. This was just prior to the TIPS surgery (2 weeks) and my Hepatologist expressed he didn't want any evasive surgery done without his consent. It happened on a Saturday and he could not be reached to give his consent to do the surgery. I waited 4 hours while they tried to subdue the hernia before I overrode his order and had the surgery done. He called 30 minutes after I was in the O.R. I narrowly escaped kicking the bucket once more. With a toxic pool of chemical floating around in your stomach surgery (even minor) has high risk factors for infections. Thankfully a skilled surgeon was on deck that night. They fixed the hernia but couldn't place the screen mesh to prevent a recurrence, It posed to high a risk for infection.
