Connie, I believe she's being seen at UNC Chapel Hill. They have a great transplant program but are pretty rigid. Unfortunately I have no way of comparing services with other centers, but from what I've read over the years while being here leads me to believe the program has stricter policies than others. If she has Medicare I'm not sure why they are brow beating her over the cost. I'm thinking this has more to do with her stability and potential to take care of the new liver if she qualifies.
They really keep a close track on you and the issue with a caregiver being present at your appointments is stressed. Perhaps you can get away with it a few times with not having someone there but eventually I've felt like they will catch you. It's been asked every single time I've went to a appointment and they look for my wife in the lobby when I'm called back.
David mentioned in another post that "They treat the new liver as theirs". Referring to his hospital. Same here. It's stressed repeatedly that you need to be able to take care of it, Financially, Medically and mentally. I've come to look at it like getting a dog from the pound. I recently tried to adopt one and by the time they got through explaining the regulations and fines if it strayed I said "forget it". I guess there's enough people who really want that dog and don't mind the hassle (pun intended).
I suppose it could be worse. You could have a transplant center who gave livers out like Halloween candy and they didn't care about
the quality or the life of the patient afterwards. Just my 2 cents but they have to look at the big picture. The harsh reality is that if it comes down to eating or buying a 1000.00 a month prescript
ion bill most people are gonna eat. Yes, Medicare covers alot of those cost but if your financially exhausted and show that you are struggling before without added cost, How do you manage afterwards? Again, You have to have a plan. Sell your home and move into a place you can manage. Cut back on your allotment of
cookies in the
cookie jar, If you will.
I'm not gonna get on a rant about
"IF" or the hardships we all face with healthcare. Suffice to say over the years you, I and many of the regulars here know what sacrifice's it takes to make it through everyday. Have we had to do a few white lies? Have we broke a pill in half to stretch the prescript
ion out? Have we forgone a week without meds because we had to pay a light bill? Not all here would answer yes but a vast majority probably would. Hey, Life deals you lemons sometimes. It's up to us to make those lemons taste better. Otherwise you can sit around griping about
it and do nothing. I've been making chicken soup with chicken sh** for so long now I can't taste the difference.
