I love my brother but he has chosen his own road in life. He's a big boy. Yes, I'll be there for him if and when the time comes for him to stop killing himself but I won't condone or facilitate his actions. I know it's not my decision and if the shoe was on the other foot he couldn't have told me anything without me getting resentful.
I went back home to GA for his 40th B-day about
3 years ago. I was sick as a dog and fresh from TIPS surgery but I wanted to see my brother (potentially one last time). My wife and I made the trek under much protest from doctors, friends and the wife herself (Yack, Yack, Yack all the way 5 hrs.). Got there at 11:00 am and they were all butt wasted. This continued on till Sunday at one 1:00am when I was designated to drive my brother and his wife back home from a massive party. I had enough of the shenanigans by Saturday and my wife eyeballing me. On the way taking them home (as if I needed more convincing) the smell of alcohol was overpowering in the SUV, Drunken silly rambling and the general feeling I had been babysitting a grown man for a few days sunk in. And then it happened "The coupe de grace" if you will. We arrived at his home and there in the living room he started crying " Don't leave me man!!!!, I love you bro......... ". All I could think was if I can survive the trip back home with my wife I'll be fine
.
I guess I'm fortunate in the fact that the pain of liver disease convinced me from the start that drinking wasn't a option for me. A wife that doesn't drink certainly helps also and the constant threat of her leaving my sorry rear sealed the deal. I didn't feel tempted to drink at that party and I surely could have. I just don't want to die, At least not that way. I think people don't really understand just how bad things can get when your liver goes south. I've always argued that young people in urban area's that pick up a gun and shoot someone have never had to witness the carnage up close and personal that a bullet does to flesh, Something us country folk learned early on in hunting and cleaning a animal. Like so with alcohol if used carelessly it can cause really nasty damage and unless you get to see it first hand it means nothing.
