Sharon,
Good Morning to you! I have thought about you and hoped we would hear back.
I wanted to ask you what can your SIL do for herself right now? Can she get showered, dressed, toilet, and prepare food? I figure from the age of her children you mentioned, that she is a fairly young woman. I do hope we can help get her turned around and on track with life. There are a lot of sad stories, but many full of hope and years past TIPS and transplants. So don't give up hope!
Glad to hear you feel comfortable with the GP. Your SIL truly needs a liver doctor (hepatologist) so she has the correct care. She had a TIPS, so we know some things about where she is with liver disease. That can extend her life for years, which is a good thing.
Can I ask how old your SIL is and if you have the list of medications? It sounds like you are concerned about drug addiction? I am not sure why she takes pain meds, but with TIPS, be cautious. They can be a problem IF she has HE, along with Ambien, benzo's, some anti-depressants. Here is a little story at hour house. Themister broke his shoulder last year, when he had pretty significant HE and balance problems. Hallucinations were unreal while on pain meds. He saw long, greasy hair growing rapidly on the dog. Then piles of vomit on the floor that he covered with paper towels and little animals running across the counter's. Of course, none of these things were real, and happened in the middle of the night. The poor guy was sleeping in a recliner due to the shoulder, and I woke up to piles of paper towels, and he still throught it was real. Scary. That can happen with HE and meds that normally would not be a problem. Also, we always put out this alert to caregivers.... It can be dangerous if you have firearms in your home, and best to remove them..... Be alert for hallucinations and paranoia due to HE. It took a learning curve I hope we can short for you.
Do you know her Hep C genotype? The new Hep C treatments are wonderful, Sharon! That is good news in the Hep world and her world!
The 3 numbers needed for her MELD...INR, creatinine, and bilirubin. Then we can look at her MELD to know how sick she is right now.
Liver disease, even without hepatitis, is within the scope of this forum. You have your hands full for certain, and we are here to support you in caring for a loved one with liver disease.
With liver disease as the focus, it really does not matter how long she has been sober unless you are documenting for a transplant evaluation. She needs 6 months DOCUMENTED at most transplant center's. You can give the transplant center a call to see what they suggest for documentation, perhaps. Hang in there! We care. Big Hugs,
